LG Venus - Cellular phone - CDMA2000 1X - slider - pink - Verizon Review

I purchased the LG Venus a few days after Thanksgiving (a little over a week ago). Initially I had purchased the LG Voyager after reading the reports on its features. Since this review is about the LG Venus, I'll just say I returned the Voyager after 12 hours and exchanged it with the LG Venus. I am very happy with my decision. This phone packs a huge amount of features in such a beautiful and small (but not too small) form factor. I was first impressed with the practicality of the dual screens on the front as many have noted. After tooling the previous day with the Voyagers lack of responsiveness with the touch screen I was instantly pleased with the Venus' ability to recognize my taps. There is no sensitivity control (nor does the Voyager) but after a few minutes you can quickly become accustomed to how it works. The best feature of the touch screen display's ability to adapt its menus prompts according to the action you are currently conducting. When you are using it as a phone the buttons for Mute, Speaker Phone etc are prominently displayed for touching. It's a huge step beyond the ubiquitous soft keys that Verizon phone depends on for many of its phones.
The number keypad is well constructed and tactile. There's no slipping or mistakenly pressing two buttons at once like I've noticed on some smooth face keypads. This is my first slider phone and I must say it was a quick transition from the standard flip phones and all the comfort of the old candy bar Motorola phone I had years ago. I like hanging up the phone by pressing the face closed against my leg instead of flipping it closed too. One vice I had with my old LG VX8100 phone was the VZW Texas Hold'm game I had purchased (note: not transferable, had to purchased again for new phone). I didn't realize not all Verizon phones were compatible with all the games. The Voyager didn't have the game as an option (guessing inside landscape screen made it incompatible). I was very happy to see IT WAS on the LG Venus.
The Venus includes a nice 2 mega pixel camera as stated, no flash (decent night vision mode though, bit blurry). Average pictures and the controls are very similar to basic point and shoot digital cameras. I haven't dabbled with the video yet, but I think its limited to 30 seconds. I would definitely suggest getting a Micro SD card. The on board memory is less than a gig and you'll need the card to load MP3's due to right management laws. It handles 8 gig, I opted for a basic 1 gig though. If you are looking to replace our Chocolate this might be a good option for you. Friends of mine have the Chocolate and complain about their cheek often bumps buttons while talking. In the week or so that I've had the phone, it's never been an issue with the touch screen. The vibrate and sound features are neat, I turned them off because the novelty wore off and I wanted to save battery. The battery runs as best as I'd expect. I'll probably have to charge it once or twice a week with normal use. Text messaging is relatively easy for a non-Qwerty. While texting, I like how you can change from Word (used to be called T9-Word) to Abc/ABC etc from the Touch screen instead of soft key though. If you are not happy with the fancy smancy new interface on the Venus the 'Display Themes' in the Settings window has 'Classic', which looks like the interface of the rest of Verizon's cell phones. I liked the Venus Color option.
One thing that surprised me was that I was able to make calendar events on the phone and bluetooth them to my Palm T|X. I didn't think they would be compatible. (Note: Palm T|X seems like GSM phones for dialing and can't get it to work on Verizon's CDMA system, oh well) I like having two devices, so as not to worry about a single battery failing and wiping out all my communication ability. The back of the phone is nice textured plastic instead of the normal smooth faux metal finish. Feels good in your hand and doesn't slide on the table like my old phone.
Good Features not mentioned above:
- The main screen (non-touch) allows for animated gif files like my old LG VC8100 did. Make you own animations in Fireworks etc, great for designers who like to customize or download animations you like from the web.
- The MicroSD/SDHC card slot is accessible without having to remove the battery or turning off the camera. Other phones aren't so lucky.
- No antenna for calling or using Verizon's EVDO mobile services (I didn't buy the ultra package, so I can't comment on those features)
- Elegant chrome frame and black finish, reminiscent of the iPhone, but not a blatant copy.
- The phones call quality and reception are just as you'd expect from Verizon. No dropped calls and I can hear the other person very clearly. (Located in Phoenix, other areas might differ).
- Surprisingly good sound quality from onboard speakers
Some Gripes:
It's minor, but I liked the old power plug on my LG VX8100 better. It was at the bottom of the phone so it was easy to find while driving and just click in the plug. This has a cap over the port (I guess you could snap it off) and it is located on the left side. Just a hair more difficult to manage than before. The navigation controls that appear when needed on the touch screen are nice but the BACK button located on the bottom right corner is bit too large for my thumb sometimes. I go for the Down arrow and end up hitting BACK by accident. It's happening far less often, but I am sure others will find it clumsy at first.
The camera has a longer than desired lag between pressing the button and the phone reacting. (the 'Say Cheese' audible voice option is cute though, my wife liked it).
The front screen is prone to finger prints as most devices of this nature, but it doesn't interfere with readability.
Directed to this phone and Verizon in general, no compatibility with web pages that contain Flash content. (I haven't tried internet browsing on my Venus, I use the Palm T|X for that functionality)
I haven't yet found the setting to remove the starting animation. It takes a couple of seconds to boot up. Hopefully after reading the manual I can find that setting.
I don't know of many (if any) phones that have FM radio, but that would be very nice thing to add to this already feature rich phone.
Headphone jack is non-standard for regular MP3 players style head phones. Adapter or special head phones required otherwise.Overall this is the best phone I have every owned from Verizon. If you are up on your contract for the 'New every 2' this is something to consider for the $100 off. There was a $50 mail-in rebate when I bought the phone that was nice. I'd suggest it to anyone that doesn't need a qwerty style phone and wants all the bells and whistles that Verizon has to offer.

Sony Ericsson W580i Black Phone (AT&T) Review

Sony Ericsson W580i Black Phone (ATandT)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was up for a two year contract renewal for ATT and for months now I have wanted an iPhone but I've waited for the 3G, or at least the second generation, iPhone... my trusty SE s710a was still good but I figured if I have to sign a new 2yr with the iPhone anyway, why not get a free phone out of it?
After looking at the lackluster selection of phones by ATT, I was captured by the style of the w580i. So I figured I would give it a try... and I am not regretting it a bit!
This phone is much smaller than the monster I had before, and unlike older SE phones, the UI is very snappy. If you read most online reviews, they speak the truth. The keypad is small but after a little while you get used to it. T9 is much improved over my previous phone.
The camera is OK, nothing special. But it's better quality then the iPhone!
Call quality is superb. Feels comfortable in your hand during prolonged periods of time. I have had many friends say that the sound quality on their end is much improved over my previous s710a. The loudspeaker on this can get LOUD but it's good that way!
The Walkman function on here is killer! I works sort of like an iPhone's in how smoth it functions. There's a dedicated WKM button, anytime you need to go to the app, click it and you jump to the WKM program, click it again and you go right back to where you were!
The sliding function has been solid so far, only time will tell if it lasts. The keys have been reported to crack easily- one reason I'm not discarding my s710a yet... we'll see. But that's not a reason to not buy this phone. I love it to death right now and it will deffinately hold me over till I get a 2nd or 3rd gen iPhone!
BTW the SanDisk 4GB MemoryStick Micro M2 card works perfectly fine with this phone. And since the phones memory is only about 14MB, it's DEFFINTELY worth the extra cost to get one.
UPDATE 02/2008: After using this phone daily for several months now, I am still loving it. The walkman is somewhat solid, and file transfers from the phone and a iMac is smooth. Pictures look good, especially in daylight- night shots are very unimpressive.
I hate the the ATT Internet button on the front. Both shortcut buttons are not re-assignable, so every time i click that button it tries to connect to the internet, which i disabled... very annoying. But nothing to keep me from recommending this phone for the price you can get it with,
Constuction has been holding up. The plastic is clicking a little, but I think it will be OK. The screen is amazingly crack/scratch resistant.
Phone call quality isnt as stellar as I first said, but much improved over the s710. I think real flip phones still have better phone quality. Real flip phones also have a much worse UI, which for a texter is more important.
4GB Flash card works without a hitch. Still my phone of choice to hold me over till iPhone 2.0, sometime in Summer/Fall 2008

These are great for my Windows 7 Phone. I hate most touchscreen devices but if you want a great smartphone these days you have to conform to an extent. So this was answer to my woes with touchscreen phones. I haven't tried it on my husbands iPhone but I did try it on my iPod Nano Touch mini clip on, and it does not work on that at all. But since I bought this for my phone I'm really happen with this product.

T-Mobile G1 Android Phone, White (T-Mobile) Review

T-Mobile G1 Android Phone, White (T-Mobile)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Battery in my old phone died; I was eligible for an upgrade. I was holding off on upgrading until the G2 was released in May but I called T-mobile and here is what they did:
Instead of replacing the battery in my Motorola Rizr, they offered me a free device to hold me over until I wanted to use my upgrade for the G2. So not only did I get a free G1, they also let me keep my upgrade so that when the G2 is released, I get to use my upgrade for that. hahah how great is that? On top of that, I asked them if I needed to return the G1 when I got my G2. She said no and that I could keep it. This is why T-mobile is awesome. Seniority with them takes you a long way. ok onto the device.....
(There aren't many bad things to say about it so I'll get those out first)
THE CONS
-No video camera?
Eh? I could be wrong but I cant find it.How can Youtube be a feature of the phone, but the phone NOT have a video camera to record movies? Just seems silly to me.
-A little bulky
But not too bad like I was thinking (I think this is because of the keyboard which the G2 will not have btw)
-Camera not so good
Only 3 megapixels? C'mon now! We can do better than that.
PROS
(Theres actually so many I can only highlight a few)
-Youtube & Google Features are great
They are pretty much the only websites i ever use on my computer at home anyways. Having them "specially featured" on my handheld makes me a happy camper.
-The Android Market
Brilliant. absolutely amazing concept. Endless applications. Anyone can put something on the market so there is also junk to weed through! Which is expected. But I personally like the liberal approach to it. This place pretty much lets you create/upload/share all kinds of cool programs for your device. This "transormability" or personalization technique is what makes the Android network so great. It allows you to turn your device into the handheld of your dreams. How can you wrong with unlimited options? that means endless options for your phone. Not any one person's G1 is like anyone others. That idea is just amazing.
-Love the touch screen/phsical keyboard option
This is awesome that you have that option. I have to have a keyboard but at the same time, there are times when touchscreen is more practical. So bravo to them for giving us both options.
-EXTREMELY User Friendly: I'm THAT guy that reads the instruction book front to back. Not with the G1. I was actively surfing the net, emailing, watching videos, and texting probably within minutes the battery was fully charged. Which is another good thing. This thing gives you a percentage bar on the front and it charges very quick!
- Battery Life A+
A fully charged battery will last 12 hours if your using the phone NON-STOP (this includes using internet, emailing, texting, talking, camera) Thats pretty impressive if you ask me. How do I know? I actually put the phone to the test!
- Sync'ing capabilities
You can connect this thing to just about anything! I love how you can connect to your own wireless connection in your house. Makes surfing the web even faster than the phone naturally can!
Youtube and google are dominating the web. They are now dominating the cell phone world. This is an A+ device. I rarely use my PC now. No need. I'm extremely critical over my gadgets too btw but this device is flat out awesome.

The T-Mobile G1 also includes Google Maps Street View, enabling you to explore cities at street-level virtually while on the go. Without taking a step, you can tour a far-away place as if they were there--standing on the street corner. Even better, the Google Maps feature syncs with a built-in compass on the phone--an industry first--to allow you to view locations and navigate 360 degrees by simply moving the phone with your hand.
Use the G1's 3G and Wi-Fi connection to attach and share pictures over e-mail and MMS or download music from your favorite web sites, as well as upload and post pictures to your personal blog.
The G1 features a rich HTML e-mail client, which seamlessly syncs your e-mail, calendar and contacts from Gmail as well as most other POP3 or IMAP e-mail services. The Gmail application provides features such as conversation view, spam filtering, search, and labels that Gmail users enjoy on their computer while offering new features such as integration with the phone's contact list. And it multitasks, so you can read a Web page while also downloading your e-mail in the background.
It also combines Instant Messaging support for Google Talk, as well as AOL, Yahoo! Messenger and Windows Live Messenger in the U.S., and IM presence allows you to see whether your friends are online, offline, away. The G1 also supports advanced text messaging features, enabling you to easily flag, delete or move groups of messages and keep track of group conversations through threaded text messaging. The Google Calendar app on the G1 syncs with the Web-based version, so any event that you add to your phone will show up on the Web-based Google Calendar (and vice versa).
Other features include:
3-megapixel camera with autofocus for still photos

Frequently Asked Questions Q: Do you have to have a Google account to use T-Mobile G1? A: Yes, customers must log into the phone using a Google account login when they first use the device. Once you do log into T-Mobile G1 using a Google account, your Gmail and Google Calendar will all sync to your phone providing secure, up-to-date access to your personal information. If you don't already have an account, the startup process will walk you through creating one. Creating a Google account is free.
Q: Do customers need a voice and/or data plan to use T-Mobile G1? A: Yes, when you purchase T-Mobile G1, you must add one of two T-Mobile G1-specific data plans to their account. This is similar to other all-in-one devices we offer like the T-Mobile Sidekick or the T-Mobile Shadow. Customers must also have a voice plan.
Q: Is the G1 compatible with your HotSpot @Home service? A: No. Unlimited HotSpot Calling (formerly named T-Mobile HotSpot @Home) is not included in the T-Mobile G1, although the device can browse the Web over high-speed wireless connections including Wi-Fi and our 3G network.
Q: Are there any advantages to using Gmail on the device versus another type of personal (POP3 or IMAP) account? A: Yes. After first logging into their Google account, you will have all your Gmail, Google Contacts, Calendar and Talk data automatically synchronize with the phone. Anything you do on the phone with these products will seconds later become available on the computer and vice versa. If you were to ever lose their phone, their information will still be available and seamlessly synchronize with a replacement G1. You will also benefit from push e-mail and calendar alerts (this is also available for the multi-headed e-mail client). Finally, Gmail's contacts are synchronized automatically with the phone's contact list.
Q: What is the "search from everywhere" feature? A: "Search from everywhere" provides customers the ability to do contextual searches. T-Mobile G1 has a hard key on the QWERTY keyboard that you can touch in order to start a search within any application you are in. For example, if you are in your contact list and hit the search key, the device will search your contact list. If you are in your e-mail and you hit the search key, the device will search your e-mail. You can also start a search within each application through a search option within the application.

Warning! I am NOT a techie. I am just your average everyday technology-using non-...uhm, techie. So what you'll get here is just a superficial review based on my observations. Ask me what certain programs are for, your guess would be as good as mine. :) So here goes...
Exterior - Don't judge a book by its cover for sure! The Samsung Omnia has a very simplified, sleek look. Just three buttons on the front: accept call, end call, and for navigation.
The Touch Screen - The screen is adequate. The touch screen sensitivity is fine, although sometimes you need to tap two or three times. But then again, being the phone is new I suddenly find myself with a very light touch.
The Keypad - Portrait-oriented, the keys are narrower even for my small fingers. But I typed 'the quick brown fox...' sentence with only 3 errors. Landscape-oriented, the keys are much much better.
Battery Life - This is the only area with which I had a big problem. I researched a lot about this phone but somehow I missed out on this one important factor. It turns out this phone's battery can only last an average of 5.8 hours. I charged it one whole day and the next day I had to recharge it twice again, and after 3 hours it died on me. This is NOT good. So I looked up ways of saving battery life and hit on this - http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsMobile/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3979662&SiteID=65. The topic is about HTC Diamond, but the advice works on Omnia. Right now I'm up to 75% charged after 1.5 hours. Believe me, I'd rather have that than charging it for a full day. I'm still researching for other tips on saving power. :)
Wi-fi - Since this is an unlocked international phone, I don't get the advantage of 3G network here in the US. But with the battery life issue, that's okay with me to just use the internet while I'm at home using wi-fi. This might seem very discouraging to some, so you can always avail of the Omnia from Verizon. It can access their 3G network.
Text Messaging - I'm a text fanatic. I give Omnia 100%! The only thing I don't know how to work out yet (or this might not even be possible) is how to make the messages in my inbox just reflect the sender's name in the front-view of the folder instead of a snippet of the message. I don't know, I just feel uncomfortable with seeing snippets of messages at a glance. :)
Camera - Really really nice!!! 5mp with auto-focus, flash, smile-focus, image editing, and a lot more. :D
Video - Pretty decent for a phone.
Synching the Phone to PC - Really haven't figured this out yet. I popped in the CD and followed the steps but I think I missed something since after synching it, my phone alerted me its memory was low. I checked my media storage--I had downloaded almost every file in my computer from pictures to music to videos! That's a looot of memory! I had to hard-reset my phone to erase everything. Good thing I only had it for 1 day at that time. :)
That's it for now. Will be updating if I have any more info to share. :)

Palm TREO 800w Phone (Sprint) Review

Palm TREO 800w Phone (Sprint)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I would change my rating of this phone to a 3 or 2 - read my review to find out why.
Day 1:
================================
I have only had this phone for just under 24 hours. So far I have a positive opinion of it.
1. Reception:
Appears to be very good.
2. Screen resolution:
Very good. Able to read small text easily.
3. Touch screen:
Very responsive when using fingers or the stylus. I sometimes need to press firmly to click through links or push accept on-screen buttons.
4. Navigation:
Scrolling is extremely responsive.
5. Phone mode:
Very good sound quality and people report hearing me well. I did hear a little bit of static when speaking to someone, but that may have been on their end.
6. Speaker phone:
Works well. Tried having a conversation with my brother who has an iPhone and had difficulty hearing him while driving in my car. This is probably due to the background road noise and due to the iPhone's poor sound quality (he tried using the iphone as a speaker phone, hand-held, and with a headset).
7. Camera:
Have taken one picture in a poorly lit room, and it came out reasonably well. Good enough to create profile pictures and take occasional pictures.
8. Internet connection:
Very fast. Getting 800k down and 350k up.
9. Included web browser:
Very fast. Loads pages much faster than the 755p or even the iphone. This is probably due to the much faster EVDO rev-A connection and faster processor and sufficient RAM.
10. Weight:
Reasonable.
11. Build:
Feels sturdy in the hand and easy to hold.
12. Interface:
Relatively easy to scroll and move around the screen and accept/select options. Sometimes, I feel I need to use the stylus to move the page around or to select items, and this will get easier with practice.
Day 15:
==================================================
Update:
After having this phone for 2 weeks, I have the following complaints:
Battery life is pathetic. Even with screen lightly lit (3rd bar from lowest), bluetooth off, wifi off, and email synchronization off, the phone's battery life drains quickly upon use for browsing the web or checking directions, or talking on the phone.
Windows mobile was not designed for touch screens. It is hard to move pages around (you need to use the directional button), and it jumps from page to page, so if you don't read the last light of page one, when you press down, you can't see that previous line.
The buttons do not really make sense when compared to the palm version. You need to hit the green talk button to get to the home screen (or hit "ok" a bunch of times). Similarly, to add a contact, or to check call history, you need to navigate through screens, which makes it annoying, confusing, and slow to get to previous callers. When you type in a persons name, and want to "edit or view all their contact info", if you accidentally, hit the middle directional button when highlighting the person's name, it immediately begins to call them, and the windows lag prevents you from canceling the call before it goes through.
Speaker phone and regular speaker (even with the included headset) are pathetic. Unable to use speaker phone while driving as it is not loud enough and when you do turn it up it over-attenuates (blares) causing me to be unable to understand the other person. Similarly, the other person has trouble understanding me.
Voice quality when holding phone normally, is good, though not as good as my previous Sanyo 4920, and the voice quality (earpiece) definitely has static and the max volume is sometimes not enough.
Touch screen can be responsive, and I tried using Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta which sort of works like the Iphone touch interface. However, trying to select links is hard, I generally need to angle my fingernail or use the stylus and poke at the screen repetitively to get it to work.
The phone does have great bandwidth capability, I clocked it at around 1.2 MBit download and around 600 KB upload which is great.
Bottom Line
================================================
I don't recommend this phone for most users, as you will get frustrated with the interface and the battery life.

LG Rumor LG260 Phone, White (Sprint) Review

LG Rumor LG260 Phone, White (Sprint)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
-Uses Sprint Vision (Not Power vision - EV-DO) so I didn't need to change my plan. -but this may be a con for others-
-Qwerty key pad
-1.3 Mp camera
- Applications: Facebook, Aim, Instant messenger, Email, internet.
-Micro Sd slot so you can store more music and pictures
-Bluetooth
-size and weight is great and the raised buttons make it easier to dial.
-music player sounds pretty goodCons:
*Some of my con's are quiet specific to things that I usually want/need in a phone, and didn't realized until after I had received the phone. Its still a good phone, but I would be happier if it had some improvements.
-Camera doesn't have a flash.
-Glitches in photo program. If you select pictures to save to your phone (either via online albums or pictures sent) it may save the photos you didn't want, or will just save the first photo 3 times, instead of the 3 different photos you selected.
-QWERTY key pad should have a button for the period, you need to "shift" then hit the period.
-The typing software can use some improvement, such as predicting words and such. The feature is there but lacks accuracy.
-Screen needs better resolution & colors. currently 176x220 pixel resolution.
-*Can't use own music (on SD card) as ringtones,
-*Difficult/can't use own pictures (from SD card) as the background/screen-saver.. I still can't figure it out.
-*Short cut navigation key for some reason the category "My content" doesn't let you make a shortcut for the sections within it. I want a shortcut key to Google maps, which is within 'my content', but it doesn't allow it, the best it will do is let you shortcut to 'my content' and then you have to scroll from there which is kinda annoying..
-*The idle/key lock screen is always the black screen with the time that you can't change.
-*There isn't a flashing light to tell you of a missed alert, until you click on a button and see the black/keylock screen. Else the phone just looks like its sleeping, so you have to consistently click on the buttons to see if you've missed any alerts. Pictures you take with the phone look pretty well (granted you have the prefect lighting) on the computer, but everything on its low resolution screen makes photos seemed washed out and blurry.

What a fun little gadget.. I spend a lot of time Im'ing so needed to upgrade myself to a easier phone. the keyboard is great, keys have enough space between them so that my mashed one too many thumbs can still hit the right keys when i want to.
The camera, works very well lots of options for quality size and such, also works very well in video camera mode ( you get a 30 second clip with sound).
The pictures do not do justice to the phone the color is closer to an olive drab metallic.. very attractive and suitind for a phone named envy
A couple small things i do not like though the cover for the charging. port.. I know i am going to find some way to break it off, its a little pop out swing panel. Also I am having some problems keeping the rotating shutter door of the camera closed ans as stated previously it does want to slide out of my hands also.
Overall though I am very impressed with this phone If the Iphone is out of your price range I would definatly give this one a good look.

Packed to the gills with the latest technology, the enV features a hidden QWERTY keypad, Bluetooth, a 2.0-megapixel camera, a microSD memory card slot (for memory expansion up to 4 GB), stereo speakers, an advanced MP3 player, and more. It's compatible with Verizon's V Cast Music Service, which enables you to purchase songs through your phone and download them via Verizon's fast EV-DO data network. Other Verizon service options include V Cast Video with clips from major networks, the VZ Navigator GPS turn-by-turn directions, BroadbandAccess Connect for using your phone as a modem to your laptop, and the Wireless Sync always-on email service.
Verizon Service Options With support for the EV-DO high-speed data standard, you'll enjoy fast access to the Internet and Verizon's multimedia services (additional charges applicable), with average download speeds ranging from 400 to 700 Kbps and peak rates up to 2 Mbps. (Learn more about where EV-DO coverage is offered.) The V Cast Music service enables you to download songs instantly to your phone, or purchase music through your PC and transfer the files to your phone. If purchased from your phone, you'll receive two copies of the song: a Windows Media Audio Pro Plus format at 64Kbps stereo is sent to your phone, and a Windows Media Audio 9 format at 160Kbps stereo is sent to your account in the V CAST Music online store for downloading to your PC. V Cast Music offers nearly 2 million songs, with more being added all the time.
The V Cast Video service enables you to stream or download video clips to your phone from a variety of news, entertainment, sports, and weather channels, including CNN, ABC News, E!, CBS Sports, The Weather Channel, and VH1.
Getting on the Internet is easy using Verizon's Mobile Web 2.0 package, which allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. Verizon's Get It Now wireless download service is also fully compatible with this phone. This pay-per-download service features application downloads, games and productivity tools. You can also personalize your handset with ringtone downloads using the Get It Now service.
With this GPS-enabled phone, you'll be able to access Verizon's VZ Navigator service (additional charges applicable) for voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions, heads-up alerts, local search of nearly 14 million points of interest in the US (such as landmarks, restaurants and ATMs), and detailed color maps. And Verizon's Chaperone service lets you easily locate your loved ones from your Verizon Wireless phone or PC in real time. After defining a zone, such as an area designating a school or summer camp, you'll be sent an alert via text message when the Chaperone handset enters or leaves the zone.

With BroadbandAccess Connect (subscription required), you can use your smartphone as a modem for your notebook when you connect the two using a USB cable--or open a Bluetooth connection--enabling you to access the Internet or your company intranet. The tethered modem capability is ideal when you're traveling and need to use your notebook to check email, access corporate networks, or download large files like presentations and reports. And with BroadbandAccess Connect, you won't have to buy an extra PC Card or other devices.
Verizon's Wireless Sync always-on email service (subscription required), you can stay connected and get the job done while away from the office--without a delay and in a secure environment. Email is delivered to your device in real time across the National Enhanced Services Rate & Coverage Area, and you get the ability to forward large attachments via email as well as access both your personal and corporate emails on one device. Wireless Sync offers strong security with AES encryption (Advanced Encryption Standard) technology so that unauthorized parties cannot access or alter application data transmitted over wireless networks.
Phone Features The front of the enV features a large, 65,000-color screen with 128 x 160 pixel resolution and a standard dialpad complete with a five-way control button. Flip open the horizontal clamshell, though, and you're presented with a crystal-clear, 240 x 320, 262,000-color landscape display and a full QWERTY keyboard. Dialing function buttons are also duplicated on the internal touchpad. A pair of stereo speakers reside on either side of the display, and a microSD card slot is provided on the side of the device for additional memory expansion. There's a standard jack to accept universal hands-free headsets, while the rear of the device houses the 2.0-megapixel camera. Lastly, an internal antenna keeps the enV sleek and compact, and the provided USB data port ensures convenient connectivity.
The enV's built-in address book can store up to 1000 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and e-mail addresses. The phone comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert. More ringtones can be downloaded via Verizon's Get It Now service. The phone lets you match pictures with callers to identify them, and the enV's voice recognition software supports voice commands from any user, not just a pre-programmed user's voice. What's more, many of the phone's functions can be controlled by the sound of your voice, thanks to advanced voice recognition technology. Text-to-speech technology enables the enV to read emails and text messages to you, if you so desire. A powerful speakerphone unit means you can easily talk hands-free, while Bluetooth allows you to use your favorite wireless headset.
While the enV is a great platform for watching V Cast video content, it can also capture video that can be shared with your friends and associates via video messaging. The video unit records in MPEG4 format and can capture clips up to 15 seconds in length. Of course, you can also use the camera to capture still pictures, too. In addition to megapixel resolution (1280 x 960), the camera features an LED flash, macro and night modes, a self-timer, and brightness and white balance controls.
The enV has all the bases covered when it comes to messaging, too, with support for sending and receiving text, picture, and video messages. There's also a complete e-mail client on the device for POP- and IMAP-based accounts. And of course, the QWERTY keyboard makes it a snap to type your messages.
The enV ships with a number of handy tools, including a calendar and a voice memo application. An alarm clock and calculator are also included. Use the enV's Bluetooth capability to set up a wireless link with a Bluetooth headset accessory or to connect to a computer or handheld device to exchange and synchronize data.
The enV supports V Cast 3-D games, as well as other 2-D-based games, which are available from Verizon's Get It Now service. You can also customize the phone's wallpapers and screen savers to give your phone a look that suits your style. And if music is your thing, with the built-in memory card slot and the enV's advanced MP3 player, you'll never be at a loss for something good to listen to (memory cards sold separately).
Other features include:
Bluetooth version 1.2 with the following profiles: A2DP (stereo music streaming), AVRC (remote control), HFP (hands-free car kits), HSP (communication headsets), BPP (basic printing profile for text, email), DUN (dial-up networking), FTP (file transfer), HID (support for mice or joysticks), OPP (object push for business cards, calendar items, and pictures)

LG KP500 Cookie Unlocked Phone with 3.2 MP Camera and Digital Media Player--International Version with Warranty (Black) Review

LG KP500 Cookie Unlocked Phone with 3.2 MP Camera and Digital Media Player--International Version with Warranty (Black)

I travel frequently back to the UK so this phone works great for me. It is quad-band and GSM phone which means it has a removable sim card that I can use a pay as you go sim card when I go back to the UK, and then switch it back while back in the US. Unfortunately your limited to AT&T or T-Mobile in the US as the other carriers don't use GSM phones, not sure why?. The phone itself which I bought in the UK has an adapter for 110/220v for charging in other countries which is a nice touch from LG (I once fried a US adapter by plugging it into a UK socket, duh!). It comes with a screen protector and the casing feels nice and not too cheap. The touch screen itself is bright and easy to navigate and the inclusion of a stylus that fits in the base of the phone makes it very handy when texting. The phone houses a slot for a micro SD card up to 8gb, which is ample for mp3's and photo's or video's. I don't like that you have to use the supplied headphones in order to listen to music as they aren't that good and would have preferred the ability to use third party phones.
Camera quality isn't that great, but like most phone cameras the quality is grainy, I only use it rarely as I have a good quality digital camera for that. Overall it's a great little phone that is considerably cheaper and less bulkier than the i phone. And if you need accessories then eBay is the place to go, I picked up a great leather case that fits perfectly, and a car charger. I have had the phone now for 7 months and am pleased with it so far.
Update: I recently flashed the phones firmware to the latest version which is V10n and the phone is so much better.
The touch screen works a lot better than before and the slide bar can now be used without having to press hard.
The firmware install is a little tricky and can only be done on a windows operating system, but is well worth the time as the phone's performance is so much better. Do a search for KP 500 firmware v10n update.

OtterBox HTC myTouch 3G Commuter Case Review

This is a great case but it is for the "HTC MyTouch" and not the newer "3G" model. If you look at OtterBox's website, they do not even produce a "HTC myTouch 3G Commuter Case". If you have the older MyTouch model without the 3.5mm headphone jack on the top then buy this case, you'll love it.

Pantech Impact P7000 Phone, Blue (AT&T) Review

Pantech Impact P7000 Phone, Blue (ATandT)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When my brother broke his cell phone and needed a new one, our local AT&T store was having a buy-one-get-one-free special on Pantech phones. I didn't really need a new cell phone, but I wanted to help my brother out and joined him on this special. There were three phones we could choose from and I chose this BLUE PANTECH IMPACT P7000. I mainly use my cell phone for telephone calls and to send text messages. I occasionally take pictures or video and every once in while play Tetris.
This is only the 2nd cell phone I have owned. My first cell phone had a regular number pad and I got used to texting old school style. However, I have to say that I love the QWERTY keyboard. It really is easier to text this way than on a regular number pad.
I really like flip phones, but they are getting more and more difficult to come by as it seems cell phone companies are set on switching everything over to touch screens. This is a clamshell type phone, so it's not exactly a flip phone, but it works for me. I also like having actual buttons on my phone. The numbers on the number pad are touch numbers, but they are close enough to real buttons. A protective film is recommended for the number pad because the thin coating on the pad can be scratched quite easily.
The sound quality of the phone is great. All incoming calls have sounded to me like I was talking on a landline telephone. The phone also has a speakerphone, but you have to open it up in order to use the feature.
You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the phone, so basically you're phone can now be a handheld phone book. You can between 3-5 telephone numbers for each contact, 1-2 emails addresses, and a photo ID for each contact.
I have used the alarm on the phone a few times on trips when I left my alarm clock at home or when I was at home and needed an extra alarm to help wake me up. The alarm is loud and slowly increases in volume. It can be set to repeat itself.
I've used the phone to take a few videos and pictures. The video feature can be used without opening the clamshell, but in order to take regular pictures you have to open the clamshell. Both the picture and video quality is superb, especially for a cell phone. There's no graininess in the pictures and videos I've taken.
Besides the usual ringing mode and vibrating mode, there are a few other modes you can set the phone to, including an airplane mode. I used the airplane mode while flying during the summer and it worked well. I was able to keep my phone on and use most of the features, but not have to worry about incoming calls or texts messing up the planes controls.
In addition to all of this, the phone has a calendar, notepad, memo recorder, world clock, calculator, tip calculator, unit converter, stopwatch, and timer.
The phone isn't a smart phone, but it is web capable. However, that's not a feature I'm interested in having on my phone and I've not used my phone to connect to the Internet.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with the PANTECH IMPACT P7000. It has all of the features and frills I was looking for on a cell phone, is easy to use, and is a good mixture of old school design with top tier technology. If you're looking for a cell phone to primary use for telephone calls and texting, but with maybe a few frills, I recommend it.
