(More customer reviews)After suffering for ten months with AT&T's lousy service and rude support staff, I terminated my contract early and jumped on the pre-paid bandwagon. I was accustomed to having a feature-rich phone (an HTC Fuze with unlimited data) so I began preparing myself for the humble amenities of a no-contract plan. Much to my surprise, I have found the LG Rumor2 is a quite capable phone. The QWERTY keyboard is responsive, laid out very well, and easy to use. If you're going to text often, this phone is built for the task. Call quality is decent, though I've only tested it through the handset speaker and not on a headset. I was even mildly impressed by the Rumor2's camera (1.3 megapixel) which took some e-mail quality shots. LG has constructed a lightweight but sturdy phone which won't rip a hole in your pocket.
Above all that, however, this phone has several applications which have impressive capabilities. The built-in Opera Mini browser delivers a respectable mobile web browsing experience. Despite the Rumor2's small screen, you can still see what you need to see on most websites. Google Maps is also included and is highly functional on this unit. There's even the option to purchase a GPS navigation program (runs $9.95 per month) that further expands its versatility. Along with all those features, you can insert a microSD card and listen to mp3s with the Rumor's on-board media player. If that's not enough functionality, the free Mail+IM app is incredibly useful for staying connected. As a user who stubbornly clung to Windows Mobile for over three years, I'm quickly learning that you don't need a $600 SmartPhone and $40 data plan to communicate.
Virgin Mobile's plans are highly configurable to whatever types of services you use most. I'm getting a basic voice plan, 1000 messages, and a generous data bundle all for $40 per month. I was paying $80 per month for similar services from AT&T on my contract phone.
My only real complaint is the small screen. The Rumor2 has a sharp, bright display but there's just not enough of it. That said, you'll have few problems texting, emailing, Facebooking, web-surfing, or playing games on the tiny LCD. This phone really does everything you'd need a cell phone to do.

*Some of my con's are quiet specific to things that I usually want/need in a phone, and didn't realized until after I had received the phone. Its still a good phone, but I would be happier if it had some improvements.
-Camera doesn't have a flash.
-Glitches in photo program. If you select pictures to save to your phone (either via online albums or pictures sent) it may save the photos you didn't want, or will just save the first photo 3 times, instead of the 3 different photos you selected.
-QWERTY key pad should have a button for the period, you need to "shift" then hit the period.
-The typing software can use some improvement, such as predicting words and such. The feature is there but lacks accuracy.
-Screen needs better resolution & colors. currently 176x220 pixel resolution.
-*Can't use own music (on SD card) as ringtones,
-*Difficult/can't use own pictures (from SD card) as the background/screen-saver.. I still can't figure it out.
-*Short cut navigation key for some reason the category "My content" doesn't let you make a shortcut for the sections within it. I want a shortcut key to Google maps, which is within 'my content', but it doesn't allow it, the best it will do is let you shortcut to 'my content' and then you have to scroll from there which is kinda annoying..
-*The idle/key lock screen is always the black screen with the time that you can't change.
-*There isn't a flashing light to tell you of a missed alert, until you click on a button and see the black/keylock screen. Else the phone just looks like its sleeping, so you have to consistently click on the buttons to see if you've missed any alerts. Pictures you take with the phone look pretty well (granted you have the prefect lighting) on the computer, but everything on its low resolution screen makes photos seemed washed out and blurry.

(More customer reviews)I have had this phone for a few days, and I love the look and the qwerty keyboard. I did not think I would need it as much since I am not going to carry a vision (internet access) plan after the first month, but it makes text-entry a breeze. The interfaces when using the text-msg and online programs are clean and intuitive. Everything I tried did what I expected on the first try. Unfortunately my praise for the interface and usability ends there. The menu system for accessing settings and content is cumbersome and confusing. There are individual volume settings for almost every sound the phone could make, but when it comes to customizing those sounds or tweaking other features of the phone, the options are surprisingly lacking. I upgraded from a Sanyo RL-4920, and I miss being able to change my startup/shutdown sound or set a shortcut key to lock my phone.
By far, my biggest gripe with this phone is with the keyguard feature. First of all the only way to guard your keyboard is with the "auto-keyguard" function. It will activate after a few moments of inactivity. You can not adjust the timeout and you can't shut off the 'auto' part without disabling keyguard altogether. You can manually activate it, but only when the 'auto' is also turned on. Worst of all, the keyguard shuts off if you slide the keyboard open by a fraction of an inch. I carry my phone in my pocket and so far it has deactivated my keyguard more than half the time when sitting down or standing up, and a few times while just walking around. In my opinion this shortcoming is probably going to be the deal breaker for me. Unless you willing to use a case, a really strong rubber band, or always carry your phone in your hand, I'd recommend getting a different phone or plan on having your pocket/bag make a lot of phone calls for you.
I wish sprint had more than zero non-(flip/PDA) phones, but thats for a different review.

Sprint SCP-2700 by Sanyo - Cellular phone - CDMA2000 1X - QWERTY keyboard - impulsive pink - Sprint Nextel Review

(More customer reviews)Currently options are limited for Sprint users who would like to join the QWERTY crowd but don't want an expensive data plan. As of this writing, your current choices are the Samsung Rant, LG Rumor 2, LG Lotus or the Sanyo SCP-2700. Cool name it has not, but the Sanyo SCP-2700 has been proven to be a very reliable and durable and these factors alone make all the competition pale in comparison. Both the slider QWERTY's, the Rant and Rumor, are prone to issues with the screen and keyboard. Even if you're lucky enough to avoid the widespread issues of screens breaking and keyboards becoming unresponsive, the issue of the keyboard becoming dislodged in a pocket or purse and thus unlocking the keypad is a major annoyance. True, they can both play music, hold an SD card and the Rant has a camcorder, but the track record for the durability of these phones is absolutely awful. It is common to hear of people replacing these phones every few months. I don't think the music player and SD slot are quite worth that headache. As for the Lotus, it has just as many great features as the slider phones, but it has it's own host of issues, the most glaring being that it simply stops working for absolutely no reason at all. My brother has had this phone replaced twice in the 4 months he has owned it and both of my niece and nephew's Rants started having issues almost immediately after purchase.
That really leaves us with only one option: The Sanyo SCP-2700. Now, there are some major issues regarding the feature list on this phone. Other websites offering this phone claim it is music enabled. A call to Sprint even verified that the phone is music enabled, but upon bringing it home and reading the manual, it is not music enabled. Another source of confusion is whether or not you can use a Micro USB cable to transfer files to and from this phone. When attempting to purchase the phone from the Sprint website, it actually offers you a Micro USB data cable as an optional accessory. It took 3 calls to Sprint and one call to the tech department to get a definitive answer on both of these issues. This phone is NOT music enabled and does NOT have the capability to transfer files to and from your PC or laptop. If you like custom ringtones, you will have to download them. You aren't able to bluetooth them from another phone either. All of the negative reviews you will find on this phone are directly related to the misinformation that customers receive. They go into it thinking it will have features it does not, and then are rightfully disappointed. Though, in the Sanyo SCP-2700's shining favor, I've yet to come across a single statement about this phone breaking. Also, as of this writing, Sprint seems to have corrected their product page and "music-enabled" no longer appears in the feature list for this phone.
Now that I've emphasized the reliability and durability, it's time to talk features! I don't know how I lived without threaded texting before this phone. It makes texting so much easier and you can view entire conversations from over a course of several days or weeks rather than have all your messages from different contacts all jumbled together in one menu. It also has a kind of "call waiting" feature when it comes to texts. On past phones, when sending a text and another text or call comes in, you will lose what you were typing. With this phone, it saves a draft of the message you sent, even if you have several uncompleted messages to different people. It's entirely possible to carry on several text conversations at once with this feature. Text entry itself is very responsive and quick. Some people have stated that the keyboard is too small for their fingers but my husband has large, rough hands and has no trouble texting on this phone. The keys on the keyboard are rubberized and feel nice as you are typing. I also feel that the rubberized effect makes typing easier and more accurate than smooth keys, such as those on the LG Rumor 2, because it doesn't allow your fingers to slip all over the keyboard. Another nice feature is the ability to add a unique tone for each contact when you have an incoming text. Typically you only see this feature for incoming calls and the texts are all required to share the same tone. Now you can differentiate who is texting you with unique ringtones, or even make some incoming texts, such as those from people not in your contact list, completely silent. Clearly, this phone is the queen (or king!) of pure texting.
Another favorite feature of mine is the voice & ringer option for incoming calls and texts. When selected, it will read the name or phone number of the incoming call or text. Such as "Incoming call from Bob" or "You have a message from Chris". This is nice for people who want to have custom ringtones so they can identify the caller/texter without having to pay to download them off the internet. It does a pretty good job of pronouncing the names. You can enter a very long name if you'd like, though it will only pronounce the first three words. So, for example, you could have it say "Incoming call from your husband, John." All of this is done via text entry. You just name your contacts and set the ringer to voice & ringer and the phone does the rest. It's an excellent feature, especially for bluetooth users who like to be completely hands free. You can know who is calling without even looking at your phone.
Yet another huge bonus on this phone is that it uses the Nuance voice recognition software. For those who aren't familiar, Nuance allows you to talk out loud to make calls and perform other tasks on your phone, such as checking time, checking signal strength, or even opening your calendar, all using your voice. Voice recognition isn't exactly new to the scene, but in the past you had to "train" your phone to recognize your voice, going through one contact at a time and recording your voice so that the phone would recognize you and you alone. With Nuance, there is no training. It can read your voice along with everyone else's. No training required. You can simply say "Call Mom" and it will call. It may ask to verify what you said, to which you just answer yes or no and it will then make the call. If there are several numbers listed for that name, it will ask you which you'd like to call. To bypass this, you can just say "Call Mom Mobile" and it will go straight to your mom's cell phone without asking for you to choose which number you'd like to call. It is amazingly accurate in reading what you say, and you don't have to pronounce it slowly and overly loud to make it understand you. A normal tone of voice and normal pace of speaking works just as well. This feature is simply awesome with Bluetooth. With my Samsung WEP200 (which is perfect, by the way) I can leave my phone in my pocket or even in a central area of my home and have complete control over incoming and outgoing calls with just a single touch of the multi-function button on the headset. I can plug my phone in to charge and still go on with my day and send and receive calls from my phone without being near it. Again, awesome!
The battery life on this phone is also fantastic. I can easily go three days without charging the phone. That's primarily with a lot of texting and at least three hours of phone time. Overall, it is a fantastic phone for texting and hands free enthusiasts, young and old. I don't believe for a second that this phone is reserved for teens and tweens as other reviews have suggested. It is plenty sophisticated for the seasoned texter. The only thing it lacks are the more "fluff" features such as an MP3 player and camcorder which is most definitely aimed more at the younger crowd as most of the rest of us already have a dedicated MP3 player and camcorder that will easily outperform them. I may be old-fashioned but I like my phone to be a phone. I want it to be a communication device that I can use on the go. End of story. I don't want to burn up my battery listening to music and find myself unable to make any calls.
These are the main features of the Sanyo SCP-2700 that I love and use all the time. It has a lot more to offer though, including a great GPS system, web browser, voice memo (you can record calls as well with this), all your typical organizer tools, polyphonic ringers, and more. Some of the features go hand in hand with the QWERTY keyboard like the email software and access to social networks. The product description goes into full detail of all these features. Overall, this is an excellent phone and is hands down the choice for active texters and hands free users. Pass up the other junk on the market and get this phone that will last long after the others have been recycled.

Its touch screen is responsive and its battery life is good (it's lasted me almost a week without requiring a charge, and I text a lot). It charges relatively quickly and it threads your text messages into conversations (which is probably my favorite thing about it. I hate having to switch between my Outbox and Inbox to follow a conversation). The camera's quality is also good.
But there are things you should know about this phone before you purchase it.
First of all, this phone does NOT support instant messaging, despite what MANY websites claim. Not even AIM or Yahoo. It simply isn't an option. I purchased this phone under the impression it did, and was sorely disappointed with this, so beware if that's a big selling point for you.
Security is also a bit of an issue with this phone. Pushing the 'Lock/Power' key on the side of the phone causes the screen to lock. This can be unlocked by ANYONE by sliding the bar to the right side of the screen. Worse, even this step can be bypassed by simply sliding out the full QWERTY keyboard. The only way to truly lock the phone is to go into your settings menu, enter your passcode, and lock the phone. You must repeat this process every time you are finished using the phone; otherwise it will default back to the "slide bar" method of locking, which (as stated above) doesn't really keep anyone from using your phone.
Some people also take issue with this phone's method of hanging up, as it uses an 'End Call' button on the touchscreen rather than a physical button at the bottom of the phone. Some don't like the method of scrolling through pictures and menus, a sort of 'click and drag' method using the touchscreen. Others complain about the lack of customization on the primary screen of the phone- there is the home button and nothing else. No shortcuts or icons of any kind. None of these was a problem for me, but these are things some people might want to know before they purchase the phone.
All in all, this is an excellent messaging phone (and I don't think I could turn back from touchscreens after this one, either). Some websites falsely advertise it's capabilities, but other than that I would recommend this phone to anyone.

LG Rumor 2 Phone, Titanium (Sprint) Review

(More customer reviews)I've owned both the Rumor and the Rumor2, and I'm torn between which I like better. The first big difference is the QWERTY pad - the original did not have a dedicated number line or a smiley button, both of which are nice. However, having spent almost a year with the Rumor, I'm having to re-learn where certain buttons are (namely the enter button, and that there's also a dedicated period button), but that's to be expected with any new phone.
I do miss my camcorder on the original Rumor. Had I spent more time at the store (yes, Sprint Customer Service was driving me nuts and I just wanted to get out of there with my wallet intact), I would have noticed that it didn't have a camcorder, and might have gone with a different phone.
However, that is more than made up for by the threaded text messaging (very nice when you're trying to recall a conversation, so you don't have to keep jumping between the inbox and sent box), as well as the onslaught of alarms. The original Rumor had 3 alarms plus a quick (1min, 10min, 30min, 1hr). The Rumor 2 has 5 alarms, plus a "Walk the Dog" alarm (as well as three different ringers revolving around walking your dog), and the quick alarm. Probably my favorite feature? Once again, the microSD capacity has been bumped up - this time to 16gigs!!! I'm still working to fill my 4gig that I had in the Rumor, but I suppose that once 16gig cards drop in price the way the 2s and 4s have, I'll find myself buying a bigger card. Beware, though, with a bigger card and more music, it takes longer and longer to load the music player.
Speaking of which, the music player has some nice updates from the original Rumor as well. Again, as someone who's been through way too many phones (9 in the last 4 years, to be exact), I have had the Fusic with it's music player (by far my favorite), the Musiq with it's player (the Java based piece of junk, which was only good because I could put the player in the background and still use my phone 100% for other apps), the Rumor (very basic player, just with shuffle & repeat functions), and now this one. It's still closest to the original Rumor in that I can't create different playlists (at least, in the 24 hours of owning it, I haven't found a way to yet), but it does have the option of playing songs in a list or having it shown as a player with the song information and time remaining. Again, still pretty basic, but a ton better than the original Rumor.
Overall, I'm just happy that I have a phone that isn't quirky (yet), one that has a killer QWERTY and text layout, and one that takes pretty decent pics for a 1.3 camera. Again, lots of alarm choices, the music player's decent, and not too much new to learn from the original Rumor. If I find anything else worth mentioning, I'll try to remember to bring it up :)

Samsung Rant Phone, Purple (Sprint) Review

(More customer reviews)The Rant is a good, affordable phone that does everything (email, web, video, etc) and will probably fit the needs of most users. It's a little thicker and slightly heavier than my previous phone, (a thin flip-phone also by Samsung) but it's got the full keyboard in addition to the numbers pad, which also functions as a keyboard if you're too lazy to slide the phone open. I for one despise texting with just the numeric keypad, and LOVE having a full keyboard.
The cameras on cell phones in general are mostly useless unless you're in some kind of emergency, or you just don't care about image quality. It's fine if you're in an accident and want to take pictures of the damage, and it's worth having for that, but I just don't run around taking pictures on my phone... especially to the extent that I need an image editor on it as well as the camera. For throwaway images it's fine, but for anything else, forget it. I didn't try any of the image editing (that's what Photoshop and my Wacom tablet are for!), so I can't comment on that. I had no problems sending and receiving pictures.
With the TV, movies and web, you'll never be bored again. The speaker is loud enough for most people, but you may want to keep a set of headphones on hand if hearing or privacy are an issue. I think the screen is kind of small, but in a pinch you probably won't care about that. It's definitely not going to replace my iPod. The applications can be slow when first launching. Calls are loud and clear. The phone automatically locks itself when you're done, so no calling someone when you hit the buttons by accident. Just hit * and back to unlock it.
The battery lasts a long time, and it's very easy to figure out most of the functions without having to consult the manual. Probably the most useful part is page 8, where it clearly diagrams where every key is and what it does. Once you've found that, you'll probably be able to do just about anything manual-free.
While I love the slide-out keyboard, it slides out a little too easily. It's spring-loaded, so it pops right back in. However, when I'm talking on it, unless I watch what I'm doing, it'll start to slide depending on how I hold it. It doesn't affect the call, but it is distracting. I wish there was some way to lock it into place.
As for Sprint service? We had T-Mobile before, and while it was OK, they didn't wow us or really give us any incentive to stay with them. We also experienced a lot of dead zones with them, and high bills when business ate up our minutes. Every service is going to have someone with horror stories, but I'm not one of them. The Sprint Everything plan is really the best thing for us with our high volume and length of calls. Their staff at the local store is always top-notch, and they know how to treat their customers.
I went into this wanting a Blackberry, but because of finances, we opted for this one instead. (Hubby got the Blackberry... sniffle!) I was disappointed at first, being one of those people who loves to have the coolest, newest thing out there. However, this little phone has grown on me. Whether you're in a money pinch, or you want a good phone that does everything, or you just don't want to pay for the bells and whistles that techno-geeks like me love, I think it will grow on you as well.

don't get this if you use GPS very much, tho....that feature came to a screeching halt - the phone itself just doesn't have enough memory to recalculate after taking a wrong turn - it'll literally take minutes to recalculate a route. pictures're fine, but I miss the flash from my previous phone.
also, the media player isn't all that great,....you can make folders on the micro SD card, but it won''t recognize 'em, jumbling all your songs of different cd's and genres in to one big blop of music.
so, for a simple, phone, it's a good one, just don't expect to excel at much more than normal phone would - call'n and text'n.
