You can find a great phone or a great PDA, but combine them and even the best smartphone will fall short in some respect. Understanding which tradeoffs fit your profile is the key. You will appreciate the XV-6800 if you: 1.) Have ever been called a nerd; 2.) value an endlessly customizable productivity and entertainment gadget; and, 3.) can live with okay-not-great phone functionality. On the other hand, if you are a power phone user (and/or prefer a simple interface to one with exposed complexity), you may find a simpler cell phone a better choice.
A WORD ABOUT THICKNESS
There's a widely-accepted myth that phones with slide-out keyboards are thick because of, well, the keyboard. It's not true. Like cell phone screens, they're wafer-thin: It's the battery (typically located beneath the keys) that's to blame. Because consumers comparison shop for long talk/standby time and power-draining features (e.g., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth), hefty batteries are a necessary evil.
The XV-6800 is a case in point. At about the size of an elongated Altoids tin, and weighing 5.8 ounces, it is objectively neither large nor heavy. Yet at 1.2 ounces per cubic inch of volume, pick it up and "solid" comes to mind. It's like the old trick question, "Which weighs more: a pound of feathers, or a pound of iron?" Anyway, something to keep in mind about weight and form factor.
AS A CELL PHONE
Strictly as a cell phone, the XV-6800 is competent. Reception is good, especially given the internal antenna. Voice quality is okay; speakerphone volume could be better. Power phone users may prefer a device with real (not graphical) keys; getting the keypad screen back on to input numbers or navigate phone trees is often an extra step. After the voice speed dial function kept popping up for no apparent reason, I disabled it.
SCREEN
The QVGA (320x240 pixel) touch screen is bright (adjustable in 10 increments), with good contrast, and rich color. At 2.8 inches, there's less "screen door" effect than with larger QVGA screens. Web pages render well, and even the tiny text found on non-mobile optimized web pages is quite readable.
KEYBOARD
About a second after the back-lit QWERTY keyboard clicks open, the screen switches from portrait to landscape viewing mode. Keystrokes offer positive tactile feedback and a muted click to let you know you typed a letter. After a couple of minutes getting used to the function key, you will find yourself thumb-typing away. If you simply can't deal with tiny keyboards, you can always summon the familiar graphical keyboard and hunt-and-peck using the stow-away collapsible stylus.
OPERATING SYSTEM & SOFTWARE
The phone ships with Windows Mobile 6.0 operating system (OS) and Windows Mobile 6 Professional. The OS is stable and seems more crash-free than previous versions, and is helped by the device's abundant memory. Included are pleasantly usable mobile versions of Adobe Reader, Excel, Word (intuitive, with lots of formatting options), and PowerPoint. The Internet Explorer Mobile browser works well (there is a handy launch button top right on front), with websites downloading quickly where the Verizon EV/DO data network is available.
Before considering this device a laptop replacement, though, see if creating spreadsheets and composing documents on a 2.8-inch screen is an appealing idea for you. I don't mind it, but if you are moving toward reading glasses and large text, you may be happier knowing they're there to read email attachments.
RANDOM SETUP TIP
After extensive troubleshooting and re-installs, the device was still not recognized by my PC. Here's what worked: Start > Settings > Connections tab > USB to PC. I then un-checked "Enable advanced network functionality." If it doesn't do the trick, you can re-enable it and move on.
CAMERA
The two megapixel (1600 x 1200) camera takes pretty good pictures. The many edge-of-screen icons suggest daunting complexity, but they are actually an advantage because you won't have to navigate through pages of menus just to check settings. There is slight shutter delay (this is won't replace a serious camera), but for a smartphone, it's better than you would expect. One other note: What looks like an exposed lens is actually a clear and fairly hard lens cover. It is slightly recessed and seems unlikely to scratch.
CONCLUSION
Overall, the XV-6800 is a powerful, flexible, configurable device that will be more rewarding for a tech-savvy user than for someone who thinks of it as "a cell phone with extras."

Leave the laptop behind and stay connected and productive wherever you roam with the XV6800 Smartphone, the newest Windows Mobile 6 Professional Edition device from Verizon. It features an extra-large, 2.8-inch touchscreen as well as a surprise waiting up its sleeve: just slide the top of the phone sideways to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. And the new Windows Mobile 6 operating system enables you to view and edit Word and Excel documents as well as provides instant message capabilities via Windows Live Messenger. (See more details about Windows Mobile 6 below.) The included Outlook Mobile software offers up-to-date e-mail, calendar and contact information.
It operates on Verizon's North American CDMA voice network, as well as on Verizon's speedy EV-DO data network, which enables you to quickly access audio, video and data applications as well as connect directly to your office's network. Verizon Service With support for the EV-DO high-speed data standard, you'll enjoy fast access to the Internet and Verizon's multimedia services (additional charges applicable), with average download speeds ranging from 400 to 700 Kbps and peak rates up to 2 Mbps. With BroadbandAccess Connect (subscription required), you can use your smartphone as a modem for your notebook when you connect the two using a USB cable--or open a Bluetooth connection--enabling you to access the Internet or your company intranet. The tethered modem capability is ideal when you're traveling and need to use your notebook to check email, access corporate networks, or download large files like presentations and reports. And with BroadbandAccess Connect, you won't have to buy an extra PC Card or other devices.
Verizon's Wireless Sync always-on email service (subscription required), you can stay connected and get the job done while away from the office--without a delay and in a secure environment. Email is delivered to your device in real time across the National Enhanced Services Rate & Coverage Area, and you get the ability to forward large attachments via email as well as access both your personal and corporate emails on one device. Wireless Sync offers strong security with AES encryption (Advanced Encryption Standard) technology so that unauthorized parties cannot access or alter application data transmitted over wireless networks.
Phone Features The sliding keyboard provides a familiar interface and allows for quick and efficient input of information, and the slide-to-hide form factor eliminates bulkiness for a sleek and stylish design. It measures just 0.73 inches thin and weighs a svelte 5.8 ounces. The 2.8-inch color touchscreen transreflective TFT screen automatically orients itself depending on how you hold the phone (i.e., from portrait to landscape and back again). It displays 65,000 colors and has a 320 x 240-pixel resolution.
In addition to supporting EV-DO wireless broadband networking, the Mogul also features Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), which enables you to use open wireless networks at airports and coffee shops. This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity, and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and audio/video remote control. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. You can connect your laptop (either via Bluetooth or wired USB) and enjoy dial-up networking--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server--using Sprint's Mobile Broadband Network. And when connected to a Bluetooth headset, caller information for incoming calls will be spoken through the Bluetooth device. Decide to answer the call without ever looking at your phone.
The 2-megapixel autofocus camera (with up to 8x digital zoom) on the back of the Mogul captures images up to 1600 x 1200 pixels (good enough for prints up to 8 x 10 inches). You can make such camera adjustments as white balance and exposure metering, choose from resolution modes (such as sports for fast-moving action) as well as use of the integrated flash, and set a self-timer of either 2 or 10 seconds. Additionally, the Wing can capture video with or without audio (in MPEG-4, 3GPP2, or H.263 format, the latter being best for sending via MMS). You can also play back audio and video files downloaded from the Internet or sent to you via email using the integrated Windows Media Player.
Other features include:
Included memory: 256 MB ROM (163 MB user accessible); 64 MB RAM (49 MB user accessible)
Instantly send and receive SMS Text Messages across the room or across the country.
Updated ActiveSync technology (version 4.5) offers one of the best PC to mobile device sync experiences, making it easier to configure with faster data transfer and sync accuracy.

I am not sure what the other reviewers are comparing this phone to, but I can say this is the best smartphone I have ever owned. I've been using the phone for four months. Here is what you should know about the phone:
1) Phone sports a beautiful 800 x 480 touch screen. The touch screen is very responsive compared to other touchscreen phones I've used, with the exception of the iPhone -- which is the gold standard in touch responsiveness -- but doesn't have nearly as many features.
2) The Xperia is infinitely customizable. The panels allow you to quickly switch between home screens for Search, Facebook, Skype, Weather, Photo Slideshow and many more.
3) I also love Windows Mobile. The phone can do almost anything. All of the features of the most advanced smartphone are available; MMS, Video recording, File Explorer, Micro SD Card, Cut & Paste, WiFi, Stereo Bluetooth and the best Exchange E-Mail integration available.
4) Although the OS is a bit dated, there are thousands of third party applications developed for it that anything it cannot do out of the box can easily be added to the device via third party software. A couple of applications I could not do without are SPB Mobile Shell, eWallet, Google Maps, Astraware Solitaire, Opera Browser, Live Search, WMWifiRouter not to mention the native Microsoft Office applications -- Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. All of these applications run perfectly on the Xperia X1.
5) The only things I'd like to see changed on the device are a bigger screen and improved keyboard. The screen size is 3.0 inches and I'd prefer 3.2 or 3.5 inches. The keyboard is made of flat steel keys in a small form factor that my fingers slide to easily over.
There's much more to the phone than I can give credit to in this forum, but I have been using Windows Mobile phones for about 9 years and find the SE Xperia X1a the best yet. The phone also comes with extended service and support that blows away anything offered from competing manufacturers. One of the best phones I've used. I've tried other smartphones and this one is very good.
First I'll talk about the phone hardware then the OS.
Hardware:
Very solid phone, beautiful and large screen and the feel of the device is very nice in the hands. The rubberized material on the back lets you hold the device without dropping it. Feels pretty light and really this is the size smartphones should be; the screen is absolutely perfect.
The power button I feel is a little small - it needs to be a little taller so its easier to push to power on, maybe its just the case I have it in now that makes it a little hard to push in.
Volume switches - I find I accidently push these quite often and it changes the volume. While it's great they are available we should have an option to lock the volume rocker/buttons so they dont constantly keep changing the volume.
Camera button - very nice and allows you to quickly take photos with a single click!! The camera does have an issue where it makes whites look pink - there is supposedly a fix coming from htc to address this; appaerantly this same bug was in the htc hd2 and htc fixed that; this is a problem with htc's driver not with windows phone 7. The dual led flash on this device is fantastic and allows you to take nice bright photos at 5 megapixel - obviously not the best camera in the world at 5mp but for a cell phone its really good. HTC throws in a nice flashlight app that they make which allows you to use the dual leds as a flashlight anytime you want - its really really bright - in a pitch black room it lights the entire room up - crazy cool!
Soft buttons - the buttons on the bottom of the screen - back, windows and search work great and are very responsive - touch them and easily take you back to the main screen, go back in an application or launch the search applications. Many times if you accidentally press these buttons while in a game you can easily drag your finger away and it wont kill the game and take you out of it - very nice feature so you dont accidentally keep quitting an app/game.
The speakers on this device are pretty good; I havent had any problem at all with these speakers and they are quite loud when listening to music, playing games or on the speakerphone with someone else. The clarity is pretty good too.
The sound quality on the device is excellent when taking calls; recipients have no problem hearing you either.
Call quality/signal - no problems at all with this phone; havent had a single dropped call when using this phone, you can easily switch to speaker phone at anytime by tapping on the screen and choosing the speakerphone option - switching is instant and smooth.
Battery life - I easily get one and 1/2 days usage out of this even with wifi and 3g on. Very good phone even if you are very busy and need to do some browsing, emailing and taking calls. Recharging the phone is pretty quick too whether you plugin to the wall or your computer. The plug is a standard micro? usb plug. It comes with an adapter that allows you to plug the standard usb end into a wall socket to get AC power too - very nice design.Software:
The new Windows Phone 7 OS is very fluid, slick and responsive - no slow downs at all and smooth all the way through. Very easy to understand and use. You simply swipe down and up to choose any application you want. Need something on the 'homescreen' simply tap and hold it - whether its a contact from your address book, an app, or a game you can easily organize and choose whatever you want to be on the front.
Swipe to the right and you have the entire list of all applications installed. All games are organized in the xbox live section so there is no clutter. The operating system was very well thought out and organized and is not a mess of static icons found on other smartphones.
Live tiles are excellent - when the weather upates - it shows you the temperature and the conditiosn outside (snowing, rain, sunny, cloudy, fog, etc). It shows you the day and month, time obviously, how many emails you have, how many voice messages you have, how many missed phone calls. You don't need to keep pressing deep down to find this information - its all right there on the main screen. If you want to pull the phone out of your pocket and glance down you can do that too right on the lock screen - it shows all of that information there too. Beautiful and efficient; no fiddling all day with your phone unless you really want to.
Over 4000 applications are now available in the marketplace, many of the games available are xbox live compatible - full gamerscore, achievements, buddy lists, invites, sending/receiving messages all built right in. These games are not cheap ports from other smartphone os's - these are all highly polished and unique games built from the ground up for Windows Phone 7. You have alot of great games like assassins creed, need for speed, deblob, frogger, guitar hero, hexic, max and the magic marker, project sunburst (crackdown), puzzle quest 2, the harvest, sims 3, uno. A ton of great indie games too like - birdy bounce (like doodle jump), impossible shoota, unite. There are many more games and applications. You have great applications like Netflix - you can watch full movies from your instant queue, add items to your queue. AP Mobile - read about news events from around the world, ebay - see your auctions, bid on items, manage you account, flixster - see what movies are happening in your area, showtimes, locations, top movies, news. Built in youtube app that lets you watch youtube movies.
The built in applications like Office let you view/edit ord documents, view/edit excel documents, view powerpoint presentations, view/edit onenote, outlook - view your email from multiple providers - hotmail, google, yahoo, any email provider - very intuitive and easy to use interface. Internet Explorer - optimized and is a really good browser now; pinch to zoom and scrolling in internet explorer works perfectly, loading pages is excellent and fast - no real faults at all with the new internet explorer. Music/Videos player is basically the zune interface - beautiful; manages all your videos and music here and if you have a zune pass you can listen to your music from right here - this works in the background too and you can play games and surf the web using this application in the background. With so much good, what can be bad?
- No multitasking for third party apps - we need the ability to multi-task and choose what we want running in the background. Some apps really do need multitasking.
- Copy/paste - this is a minor issue but it can come in handy when copying things from a webpage/word and emailing it to others - this is being added in a January OS update from Microsoft.
- HTML 5 support - currently internet explorer does not support html5; this really needs to be worked on immediately - supposedly an update in august will add html5 - too slow it needs to be added in asap.
- Documents - need the ability to drop documents directly from zune software and sync with office mobile.
- Camera - htc needs to fix the color problems with this camera; they fixed it in the htc hd2 so it shouldnt be a problem fixing it in the htc hd7.Hands down this is one of the best initial Windows Phone 7 devices out there; this is nothing new from htc - they make really exceptional hardware for Microsoft's operating systems. I hope to purchase the next HTC phone they make with Windows Phone 7 down the road ;)

I have experienced none of the problems indicated by the previous reviewer. This phone went to Europe with me on my vacation and performed without any flaws. Battery life is reasonable under normal use. With additional software, music and MPEG videos are great. With the 200mhz processor, the device is a bit slow, but still a great performer.

An ultra slim Pocket PC phone with a built-in QWERTY keyboard, the HTC S620 is the ideal device to keep you in touch when out of the office. Writing e-mails, texting, taking notes and writing documents, or performing spreadsheet calculations is quicker and easier thanks to the intuitive interface and easy-to-hold design. The S620 also comes with all the standard Microsoft Mobile applications, including Internet Explorer, Pocket MS, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
The HTC S620 comes loaded with a host of connectivity options to choose from. Sporting Bluetooth 2.0 technology, the S620 provides easy connectivity to headsets, car kits, and more. Connect to the Internet using its Wi-Fi 802.11b/g capability, and use applications such as Skype for convenient voice-over-IP calling, or simply connect to your cellular network for standard voice calls or data transfer over the supported high-speed EDGE network (carrier data charges apply).
Design Under the hood, you'll find a super fast (200 MHz) Texas Instruments OMAP 850 processor, and 64 MB of RAM--plenty of speed to keep the S620 running your favorite applications smoothly. With a full QWERTY thumb pad just below the screen and plenty of keys for your favorite functions and applications, the S620 is designed for easy use. You'll enjoy fast access to your Outlook calendar, contacts, and key phone functions. Alternatively, the device can be directly controlled with an included stylus. For further operational maneuvering, the included "HTC JOGGR" interface makes viewing documents, browsing web pages or searching through menus fast and simple. Lastly, a SecureDigital (SD) card slot is located the side of the device, allowing you to expand memory to your needs.
The S620's large 2.4 inch QVGA display supports up to 65,000 colors and the Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC operating system is completely touchscreen-enabled. The screen also features advanced handwriting recognition that is compatible with all of the device's applications. The rear of the unit houses a 1.3 megapixel camera, and lastly, when you need to discreetly fulfill your musical desires, there's a convenient audio jack (combined with an 11-pin mini-USB port) located on the bottom of the S620.
Calling Features Many of the S620's calling features are integrated with the Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphones operating system. For instance, the included Pocket Outlook software features a contacts list that is cleverly combined with the phone's dialing functions. Meanwhile, the phone's handwriting recognition software can be used to dial numbers and enter contact information. Lastly, the device's Bluetooth connectivity makes it easy to sync the unit with a wide range of handsfree, wireless headsets and car kits.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools The S620 is designed as a complete mobile office solution, so Internet and messaging capabilities are robust. The unit comes packed with pocket versions of Outlook and Internet Explorer. In addition to keeping track of contacts, Pocket Outlook features integrated calendar and email functions. HTC Tilt 2 Refurbished Windows Phone (AT&T) Review

HTC Tilt 2 Refurbished Windows Phone (ATandT)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this phone to replace an Iphone 2g, as part of my contract upgrade. I wasn't really sure what to expect, as I had gotten used to how the Iphone operated, but I got tired of the "apple" mentality, that everything on the phone should be their way or the highway. I got sick of not having any kind of real flexibility with the Iphone. I use my phone for personal use, as well as running a side business, and I needed a phone that was all business. This phone fits the bill perfectly. I have not had a single problem with the phone's functionality, and LOVE working with it every day. Sending email, surfing the web, and everything else you do with cell phones now a days is a breeze. WinMo 6.5 is a pleasure to use, and I can say, without a doubt, this HTC Tilt 2 is 1000 times better than the Iphone it replaced.

LG eXpo GW820 Windows Phone (AT&T) Review

LG eXpo GW820 Windows Phone (ATandT)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My carrier is AT&T and I didn't want to go through the hassle to switch carriers so I stuck with AT&T, and I wanted to get a smartphone so my choices are basically iPhone, WinMo or Blackberry. I read some reviews and decided to pick the LG eXpo over the HTC Tilt 2 or other phones.
First Impression:
+ Cool looking phone, with a chrome-plated rim on the side,
+ Impressive specs, Quad-band, HSPDA/UMTS, Wi-Fi
+ has QWERTY keyboard, the keys are easy to press
+ Has dedicated button for access to task manager, by default set to the LG Task Manager, you can change it to the WinMo Task Manager or something else
- Takes a while to boot up, feels like 10 secs
- The touch screen takes a while to get used to, it's not bad, but not as responsive as iPhone
+ Fingerprint sensor doubles as scrolling control
+ dedicated volume buttons
o By default the "today" screen is set to the WinMo default screen, but LG also implemented it's own, so I switched to that one, which is an improvement over the WinMo apps in terms of finger-friendliness (the WinMo ones were mostly designed for stylus use).
- The contacts manager is unintuitive and hard to use. Functionality as simple as "jump to contacts that start with C" is lacking.
- The task manager: has screen shots for the opened applications, but the close buttons are too small
After playing with the phone a bit more:
- Fingerprint sensor is cool, but don't be surprised if it takes more than a few swipes to recognize your fingerprint, you have to swipe slowly. Also, it traps dust.
o Camera is 5MP, but quality is so-so
o No dropped calls yet, but I haven't seen the reception bar reach full yet.
- Loaded with tons of trial software that I can't get rid of (they're in the ROM, so unless you flash the ROM they'll be there forever)
- Internet Explorer is slow, so I replaced with Opera Mobile 10 beta, but some AT&T specific links now won't work (all those Media Net links)
- The LG (called LGIdle) shell is better than the WinMo default Today screen, but would be great if I could customize some of the buttons (e.g. replace IE with Opera and remove links to the trial software)
- Replaced the LG contact manager with iContact, which looks like the iPhone contact manager
- Looking into replacing the shell with PointUI (good) or SPB Home (best!)
- Some apps try to connect to the 3G network even when I have the WiFi connection
- Some apps (esp, WinMo Marketplace) tend to lock up when they're accessing the Internet and the phone become unresponsive.
Conclusion:
It's a cool phone but the software that comes with it out of the box is lacking and be prepared to spend time researching (and $$) to get some better apps.
================
Update #1:
- Specs: I neglected to mention that this phone has a 1Ghz processor, and 480x800 screen. So spec-by-spec the eXpo blows many of it's competitors out of the water (iPhone, Droid, HTC tilt 2). The actual experience is another question though.
- Touch screen sensitivity issues: it's usable, but since it has a resistive screen, you need to apply a little pressure. Compared to the iPhone which has a capacitive touch screen, the eXpo's touch screen definitely feels inferior. There are few if any phones running windows mobile with capacitive touch screens, the only one I know of is HTC HD2 which is yet to come to the US.
- Battery life is poor, I have to recharge every 2-3 days depending on usage.
- Apps. Again, out of the box it won't have many great apps.
* Some noteworthy mention: The LG calculator can do a little more than simple arithmetic (sin, cos, tan, exp, etc), the tip calculator is handy, the schedules/tasks app is more finger friendly than the default WinMo one.
* there's a lot of apps out there you can find on the internet, that problem is that they're scattered across different sites, many good ones aren't free and not all are finger-friendly. You need to spend time to try/research good ones.
* WinMo Marketplace still has room for improvement, many apps aren't up-to-date (e.g. Bing is 4.7 but latest is 5.0, Skyfire is 1.0 but latest is 1.5); also, it has to check for updates when it starts up, and often it hangs and causes the phone is become unresponsive for a while as well.
- I tried out the voice command functionality a couple of times. Usable, but not great, and it requires you to assign a button as the "voice command" button, the problem is there aren't many buttons that you can program (one for task manager and one for camera, the other 4 are on the slide-out keyboard)
- If you select to unlock the phone using your fingerprint sensor it means you won't be able to use the default WinMo locking screen (which has info like your upcoming appointments and missed calls, see image I uploaded), instead, you'll see the screen that instructs you to swipe your finger on the sensor
================
Update #2:
- (re. voice command in update #1) I realized that I don't need to assign a dedicated voice command button. The "back" button is used for that purpose. Press and hold the "back" button and voice command will be activated. The manual (which you need to download yourself) mentions that.
- Also, press and hold the "end call" button to lock the phone.
- it seems that the LG in-call menus is not integrated well into WinMo or the lock screen. If you use the fingerprint lock screen and receive a call when the phone is locked, you can receive the call but you won't see the in-call menu (buttons like hold, speaker, end call, etc). Also, if you use the WinMo lock screen and receive a call when the phone is locked, the WinMo UI for receiving calls show up instead of the LG one.

HTC S710 Vox Unlocked Smartphone with Windows Mobile 6.0, 2 MP Camera, Wi-Fi, MP3/Video Player, MicroSD Slot--U.S. Version with Warranty (Black/Silver) Review

HTC S710 Vox Unlocked Smartphone with Windows Mobile 6.0, 2 MP Camera, Wi-Fi, MP3/Video Player, MicroSD Slot--U.S. Version with Warranty (Black/Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the S710 a few weeks ago and I have been very happy with it so far. I had previously been using a Sony Ericsson W810i which was a great phone for personal use and as an MP3 player, but I needed a smartphone for work. I didn't want something as large as a Blackberry and wanted to avoid a touchscreen and stylus. The S710 was the perfect compromise.
I've never used a smartphone or Windows Mobile before so I can't say if WM6 is any improvement. I was surprised to find while editing my contacts that there is no copy and paste function. I was able to find an add on application but it seems a rather strange thing not to include in a smartphone. The S710 comes with HTC's homescreen and green color scheme which is a color that most closely resembles vomit. This can be removed using a debranding app. On such a beautiful looking device it's a shame that HTC chose such a nauseating interface.
And this is a beautiful phone. The all chrome face is a bit much for my taste, but isn't as prone to fingerprints as I expected and it contrasts nicely with the matte keys and the flat black. The sides and back are rubberized plastic which feels soft but durable in your hand. The QVGA screen is clear and bright even in sunlight.
The phone feels solid and rugged and is surprisingly heavy for it's size. But considering all that's packed into so small a space and the long battery life it's an extra weight I can handle. The slide out keyboard doesn't lock when closed and has a slight wiggle. It hasn't opened accidentally but it's a strange contrast to an otherwise sturdy phone. The keys on the keyboard are small but nicely spaced and give good tactile response. But if you have large primate hands, this is not the phone for you.
The earpiece is loud, which is great for talking on NYC streets, but has noticeable distortion. It bothered me at first since my old Sony Ericsson was so clear but I have gotten used to it now. The vibrate mode is rather weak, and I don't always feel it vibrate especially when I am walking.
The lack of 3G doesn't bother me since I mainly use the data connection for email which EDGE is fine for. The smaller sized screen isn't that great for viewing web pages anyway. WiFi works well and connects to my home access point faster than my laptop. AT&T made a surprising effort at helping me get it set up for data but ultimately I had to find the configuration posted in a forum and enter it manually.
PROS:
Keypad, QWERTY keyboard, smartphone in a small package; I haven't found any other phone like it.
CONS:
Keyboard wiggle
Sound distortion

It also offers greater interoperability with Exchange Server 2007, providing you with improved e-mail management (such as Fetch Mail and Set Flags), Out-of-Office assistant, and HTML e-mail viewing capabilities (see more on Windows Mobile 6 below).
The S710's 2.4-inch QVGA TFT LCD screen has a white LED backlighting, 240 x 320-pixel resolution, and 65,000 colors. It comes with a built-in memory of 128 MB of ROM and 64 MB of RAM, and it's expandable via MicroSD memory cards (which currently offer up to a 2 GB capacity). Other features include voice dial and command, loudspeaker for hands-free operation, an external antenna connector, and an 11-pin USB 2.0 port that doubles as an audio jack. And don't forget the S710's Wi-Fi capability, which makes high-speed data access a breeze via an 802.11g hotspot.
The Windows Media Player is compatible with a wide variety of digital audio formats (AMR/AAC/WAV/WMA/MP3). It also offers Bluetooth stereo audio support, enabling you to enjoy your music without any wires. The 2-megapixel digital camera captures still images up to 1600 x 1200 pixels--great for 8 x 10-inch prints, and other photo features include video capture, multi-shot stills, self-timer, and white balance controls.
Vital Statistics The HTC S710 weighs 4.94 ounces and measures 4 x 1.97 x 0.73 inches. Its 1050 mAh lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 7 hours of talk time, and up to 175 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 GSM/GPRS/EDGE frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.
Powered by Windows Mobile 6 Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6 updates the Windows Mobile 5 platform with a number of handy features that make searching through email, editing Microsoft Office documents, and staying on top of your most important communications even easier. Emails can now be viewed in their original rich HTML format and now offer the ability to visit embedded links. It also includes Windows Live for Windows Mobile, which provides a full set of Windows Live services, such as the Windows Live Messenger IM application, which now enables you to chat with more than one person at one time or send a file.
With Windows Mobile 6, your phone will finally be able to emulate the power and features of your PC's Microsoft Office suite. You'll be able to neatly view, navigate and edit Word documents and Excel spreadsheets in their original formatting--without affecting tables, images or text--as well as view PowerPoint presentations.
Microsoft Office Word Mobile features include spell-check, Find and Replace commands, bulleted lists, text formatting, and support for tables for the first time.
With Excel Mobile, youÕre not just confined to editing charts: with the new Chart Wizard you can create charts quickly and easily.
PowerPoint Mobile allows you to view the full presentation, rehearse timings, check the order and any live links you may have in your presentation. You can then email comments back to the team or communicate via MSN Messenger for an immediate response.
After creating or editing a Word document or Excel spreadsheet, you can synchronize it with your PC and it will automatically be converted to the PC version.

All Windows Mobile 6 powered devices include Direct Push Technology for up-to-date e-mail delivery and automatic synchronization of Outlook calendars, tasks and contacts through Microsoft Exchange Server. It also offers a set of important device security and management features that include the capability to remotely wipe all data from a device should it be lost or stolen, helping ensure that confidential information remains that way.

This is the very best I've ever owned. I've had it for less than 5 hours and I'm already in love with it.
WP7 is the sleekest, fastest and most sexy OS out. And this is coming from a person that's been using an Iphone for the last three years.
Until you've used a WP7 phone please don't pass judgement, as that would be an injustice to the handset & OS.
For me it's WP7 and onward. can't wait till the updates start coming in.

I purchased the European version of the Diamond for use in the US on ATT. I have not had any problems so far with voice service. Data service is slower than I had on my Blackjack, but I knew that would happen. The Diamond has Wifi and it has been easy to connect to my home network and to hot spots to get broadband internet service.
The Diamond was designed to be a one hand device. It really is possible to do everything with one hand, even use the camera. (I recommend using two hands when using any camera for better stability.) The 3.2 megapixel camera isn't bad for a mobile phone, certainly better than many I've used before- when there is sufficient light. There is no flash, so your indoor photography will be disappointing.
The Touch Flo interface which seemed almost like frosting on top of plain old Windows Mobile in other HTC touch devices, is very much a fully intergrated part of the system on the Diamond. It runs very well and is every bit as intuitive as other touch oriented devices. You can turn Touch Flo off, but I don't know why you'd want to.
Diamond's good looks demonstrate that Windows Mobile devices can be great looking as well as powerful. The phone is attractive off or on, but it also great to look at when you're working on it because of the VGA screen. After several days, it still startles me how much clearer text and graphics are on this phone.
Thanks HTC for including the Opera browser. You can still browse the web using pages for mobile units if you'd like with IE, but you will want to step up to the real internet with Opera. Scroll, pan, zoom if you need to, but with that VGA screen, you may not even need to do so.
Battery life on the Diamond is as advertised unless you make heavy use of Wifi or the music player or camera. These will significantly diminish your time between charges.
A few final points: yes, the phone collects fingerprints. So do all touch devices. Sound quality on calls has been good in my experience. Sound quality on the music player is not as good as on a dedicated MP3 device. The FM radio is a great feature. I hadn't come close to filling a 2Gb micro SD card on my Blackjack so the 4Gb internal storage on the Diamond should be sufficient. Will you master every touch move immediately? No. Within a day or so? Yes.
If you live in Europe or Asia or live in the US but don't need 3G service, the Diamond is a great phone. It's pretty darn close to great even with its present US limitation.

I am unhappy in that I have just received the phone and it is the T-Mobile version of the phone. To make matters worse, the phone was not silver but gold instead. Also, the buttons are a bit different from those displayed in the listing.
Thankfully I still like the phone.
I thought there may have just been a mix up in my order until I saw someone else had recently posted a similar problem wrt it being the T-Mobile version. The listing really needs to be updated to reflect the product accurately. The variations between the the image displayed in the listing and the actual product, whether intentional or not, makes buyers like myself feel a bit cheated.

Samsung i760 Black Phone (Verizon Wireless, Phone Only, No Service) Review

Samsung i760 Black Phone (Verizon Wireless, Phone Only, No Service)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, finally a windows based phone, with real key-dialpad outside, full qwerty keyboard, big touch screen... Feature wise this phone has it all that I've ever wanted... real dialing keys were a must for me (hate the soft keys on phones like XV6700, you can never "feel" them and always have to look on the phone to know where to press), full keyboard that you can operate with two thumbs, touch screen (lately there has been a slew of smart phones without touch screens). Everything else typical windows mobile phones usually have by virtue of being windows phones or by virtue of Verizon service (calendar, tasks, office, games, auto-syncing, etc).
To me, its all about hardware of the phone, its useability and performance. Because on the inside, all windows phones are created mostly equal.
This phone has a few minor and major annoyances.
Annoyances:
1) Inability to charge the phone when connected via USB cable. This is annoying two-fold. First of all, because battery is drained faster when the phone is connected to PC, 2nd of all, because phone constantly goes to sleep when its not being charged and thus installation of software can fail unless you keep the phone active (or change power settings temporarely). Obviously, using the phone as a modem for your laptop aint gonna work for long periods of time either.
Thankfully, this major annoyance can be resolved with about $30-40 bucks extra, where one can buy a special crade to charge battery and sync at the same time.
2) No standard mini-USB connectors. A modern phone w/o mini-USB interface in this day and age? I had to buy all new cables for my car, for my work, etc. Annoying!
3) Button placement and stylus placement. One definately has to get used to this. Some of the button placed tend to get pushed more often than they should be...
4) A flap on the power connection. It's bad enough that the connection is not mini-USB, its yet more annoying that the connection is covered with a flimsy-feeling flap that needs to be unhooked and rehooked everytime.
5) Lack of carrying case or pouch or clip. Once again, this can be fixed with extra $$$.
Now, on to the good stuff about this phone, which by a landslide overwhelms the bad:
1) Windows Mobile 6 fixes alot of annoying things that were available in WM5 with older phones. No more random turn-ons, less lockups, alot more options in various software components, etc.
2) Phone is fast.
3) Opening of the sliding keyboard feels solid, snappy, well made.
4) Keyboard has been thought thru well. Keypad works in both states (with opened and unopened keyboard), reset button is easy to reach when needed, keys are easy to press. Overall, nice!
5) Standard and extended batteries are both included! I guess this makes up for the lack of charging usb connection. Extended battery lasts long time. I typically get to the half of the extended battery after 3 days of moderate useage (wireless syncing every 60 minutes, 20 mins of conversation per day, and few hours of playing Bubbles per day)
6) As a phone it performs much better than my previoux XV6700. Obviously, WM6 software is better, but also it definately has better reception vs XV6700.
Overall, my biggest complain with XV6700 and other phones like it, that they were a PDA first and a phone second. Samsung has finally made a PDA Phone that works equilly well as both.

HTC A6262 SmartPhone Unlocked--International Version with No Warranty (White) Review

HTC A6262 SmartPhone Unlocked--International Version with No Warranty (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nobody seems to mention several important things. I'm not sure if all the products are the same, or if the one I bought from this particular seller had these problems, but mine had two major shortcomings.
1) It only comes with a Southeast-Asia plug adapter (which I believe is the same as they use in the UK). So out of the box, there is no way to charge it in the US, other than via USB. At some point you will probably want to buy a converter plug.
2) There is no Market application installed on it. Therefore, you cannot, with conventional means, install any other applications on this phone. The Android OS that comes with this particular phone is crippled. I managed to root the phone and install a much better Android version on it, but it took me about 6 hours of trial and error and it put me at risk of ruining the phone (drop me a message if you need help rooting your own Hero; I saved my notes from the process).
After fixing number (2) above, yes, the phone is great and it works as expected. There are plenty of reviews out there and I agree with what they say -- the good and the bad. But it takes hours of effort and you must take serious chances to restore this phone to its un-crippled state. That is why I'm giving it only two stars.

Palm Treo 700w - Smartphone - CDMA2000 1X - QWERTY / touch screen - Windows Mobile - Verizon Review

Palm Treo 700w - Smartphone - CDMA2000 1X - QWERTY / touch screen - Windows Mobile - Verizon

I have had this phone for 8 months now, so I feel qualified to write a review. At first it seems great (the dazzle of new electronics), but I tell ya', this phone is bad news. Dropped calls, poor Bluetooth connectivity, very poor user interface to make calls and to manage calls, and just plain 'ol big/heavy. Some specific points:
> This phone does not like to hold a connection. A side-by-side comparison of another Verizon phone shows lower bars on the 700wx, and dropped calls even with two or three bars showing.
> Bluetooth connectivity is poor. My wife's Motorola connects to my Nuvi with no problem. But my Treo takes several tries before the Nuvi finds it, and then it drops the Bluetooth connection constantly.
> Poor use interface. Palm has not done anything to help the Windows Mobile platform. It's hard to hit the speakersphone button, forget getting to the Dial Pad, and forget about trying to swap calls and put them on hold. Not logical at all.
> You must subscribe to the internet service to send photos, even if you subscribe to the unlimited text/pic messages service.
> No message waiting indicator. The phone tells you ONCE that a message is waiting. After that, there is a tiny icon on the screen, but no flashing light or beeps. This is NOT an option on the 700wx. So plan on missing lots of message unless you like to check your wx's screen all the time.
> Just plan 'ol heavy for the features.
> A lovely echo is prominent on speakerphone calls.
> And the speaker for the speakersphone option is weak weak weak.
I dread picking this phone up for business calls. Palm is way behind and in trouble. I plan on dumping this phone and buying a new phone (yes, at full cost -- it's that bad). Please do not support Palm, as they are doing just the minimum to scratch by. This is one terrible phone.

To keep your smartphone's applications up to date, and to optimize the performance of your device, you may need to perform firmware and/or software updates just as you would on your PC. To learn more about updates for your device, please visit Palm's support site. Note that by clicking this link you will be leaving Amazon.com.A lot of folks said it would never happen, but here it is: a Palm device running Windows Mobile software. This isn't just any device, either. It's the latest version of Palm's wildly popular Treo series of Smartphones. Everything that's great about the Treo hardware is here, plus all the power of Windows Mobile 5.0. And to top it off, the Treo 700wx is fully compatible with Verizon wireless' EV-DO mobile broadband data service. Simply put, everything you need to do your work on the move, and at blazing speeds, has arrived.
Based upon the venerable 700w platform, the Treo 700wx Verizon Wireless phone features double the operating memory capacity of the 700w, effectively solving a few minor usability issues of the 700w. With added RAM, the Treo 700wx is for the on-the-go person who uses a more robust set of applications on a more regular basis.
DesignUnder the hood, the Treo 700wx features 128 MB of RAM (60 MB available for end user storage) and an Intel XScale 312MHz processor. The design retains the same basic form factor as the Treo 650 with a few changes. Aesthetically, the new Treo has more angular lines and a more professional-looking gray color. At 6.0-ounces, it's also slightly lighter than its predecessor. The button layout above the full QWERTY keyboard has been changed to accommodate the Windows Mobile 5.0 interface, and the screen sports 240 x 240 resolution.
Like the 650, the top of the 700wx features an expansion card slot for SD, SDIO, and MMC memory and expansion cards, and get this: Unlike the 650, the 700wx supports the Palm Wi-Fi card. Up top there's also an infrared port for line of sight data transfers, as well as a handy switch for turning off the phone's ringer. Below the screen, a five-way navigator controls most of the phone's menus and operating system functions. The left side of the unit features a volume up/down toggle plus a handy user-customizable button that can be assigned to any phone or PDA function. The rear of the unit houses a loudspeaker, as well as the 1.3-megapixel camera unit. A touchscreen stylus can be tucked away on the right side of the phone. Meanwhile, a combined charging, data, and accessory attachment port, called the Palm "multi-connector" is housed on the bottom of the unit, as is a standard 2.5 mm stereo headset jack.
Calling and PDA FeaturesLike the Treo 650, the Treo 700wx's phone and PDA functions are designed to provide an integrated, seamless experience--only this time it's all handled by Windows Mobile. The hallmark of the Windows Mobile experience is the "Today" screen that summarizes all the important information you need to make it through the day. Here you'll get message notification, upcoming appointments, dialing functions, and a Google Web searching all in one spot. As a phone, the Treo 700wx features all the functionality folks expect from a cell phone, including a handsfree speakerphone, polyphonic ringtones (polyphonic MIDI, MP3, WAV and video ringtones are supported), a vibrate mode, and picture caller ID. Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile combines email, calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes into a single application that seamlessly integrates with the 700wx's phone functions. Meanwhile, headsets, car kits and other wireless peripherals can also be paired with the unit via Bluetooth (the Bluetooth 1.2 specification is supported).
Staying productive on the road is made possible by the Microsoft Office Mobile suite, which includes Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, and PowerPoint Mobile. You also get the Picsel PDF Viewer for viewing PDF document attachments, and the File Explorer application makes it easy to browse the files on your 700wx.
Messaging and InternetThe really big news about the 700wx is that it supports Verizon's BroadbandAccess high speed wireless data service, allowing you to get DSL speeds wherever you have broadband data coverage. And what can you do with all that speed? Surf the Web faster than ever before using the bundled Internet Explorer application, or log into Pocket MSN and check your Hotmail, use MSN Messenger, or browse the MSN Mobile portal. Robust SMS and MMS functionality is built into the Windows Mobile interface, too.
One of the most important tools bundled with the 700wx is Microsoft ActiveSync, which allows you to quickly synchronize your device's tasks, calendars, email, and contacts with your desktop. You also get Exchange ActiveSync, an application that lets you synchronize data with an Exchange server. Syncing can be done via USB, or wirelessly via Bluetooth.
Imaging and Entertainment Another great feature of the 700wx is that it supports Windows Media playback right out of the box. With Windows Media Player 10, Palm users can finally play streaming and downloaded video and audio content in a variety of formats, even purchased music from "Plays For Sure" supporting stores. You can also keep your tunes loaded on a memory card and listen to stereo sound wherever you roam (requires an optional stereo headset adapter).
The Treo 700wx's built-in camera sees a bump in performance with the ability to take 1.3-megapixel (1280x1024) stills. The camera also features a 2x digital zoom, a self portrait mirror, and automatic light balancing. While the camera is great for taking stills, it can also function as a camcorder, allowing you to capture MPEG4 video to the unit's memory. An integrated media application organizes your captured photos and videos.
And last, but certainly not least, the Treo 700wx keeps the fun going when you've got some downtime with great games. Bubble Breaker and Solitaire ship with the handset, but more Windows Mobile games are available.
Suggested Service OptionsTo get the most from the Treo 700wx, you'll need to choose two additional service features on top of a voice plan. First, consider a Verizon BroadbandAccess plan, which also includes lower-speed data access in areas where broadband service is not available. If you are a frequent SMS or MMS messaging user, it's a good idea to get an Unlimited IN messaging plan to avoid pay-per-message charges. To learn more about phone options, consult our cell phone options guide.
EV-DO Wireless Broadband Coverage Learn more about where BroadbandAccess (EV-DO) coverage is offered. View EV-DO demonstration.
Vital Statistics The Palm Treo 700wx weighs 6.0 ounces and measures 4.4 x 2.30 x .90 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 4.7 hours of digital talk time, and up to 15 days of digital standby time. It runs on the CDMA 800/CDMA 1900 frequencies, as well as the EV-DO and 1xRTT data frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.Note: The 700wx supports Bluetooth Profiles for wireless headsets, hands-free accessories, file transfer and synchronization with compatible PC's. It does not support all object exchange (OBEX) profiles.
