(More customer reviews)I am not sure what the other reviewers are comparing this phone to, but I can say this is the best smartphone I have ever owned. I've been using the phone for four months. Here is what you should know about the phone:
1) Phone sports a beautiful 800 x 480 touch screen. The touch screen is very responsive compared to other touchscreen phones I've used, with the exception of the iPhone -- which is the gold standard in touch responsiveness -- but doesn't have nearly as many features.
2) The Xperia is infinitely customizable. The panels allow you to quickly switch between home screens for Search, Facebook, Skype, Weather, Photo Slideshow and many more.
3) I also love Windows Mobile. The phone can do almost anything. All of the features of the most advanced smartphone are available; MMS, Video recording, File Explorer, Micro SD Card, Cut & Paste, WiFi, Stereo Bluetooth and the best Exchange E-Mail integration available.
4) Although the OS is a bit dated, there are thousands of third party applications developed for it that anything it cannot do out of the box can easily be added to the device via third party software. A couple of applications I could not do without are SPB Mobile Shell, eWallet, Google Maps, Astraware Solitaire, Opera Browser, Live Search, WMWifiRouter not to mention the native Microsoft Office applications -- Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. All of these applications run perfectly on the Xperia X1.
5) The only things I'd like to see changed on the device are a bigger screen and improved keyboard. The screen size is 3.0 inches and I'd prefer 3.2 or 3.5 inches. The keyboard is made of flat steel keys in a small form factor that my fingers slide to easily over.
There's much more to the phone than I can give credit to in this forum, but I have been using Windows Mobile phones for about 9 years and find the SE Xperia X1a the best yet. HTC Mogul PPC-6800 Phone (Sprint) Review

(More customer reviews)When I recently decided that I was tired of printing my schedule out each night and toting a hardcopy with me, the obvious answer was to get a convergent device that integrated PDA functionality with cell phone functionality. After a fair bit of research, I bought an HTC Mogul for a couple reasons: WiFi connectivity to the web, Microsoft Windows Mobile for reliable synchronization with Outlook, a large touchscreen, and a slide-out keyboard to name just a few.
On paper, this device was hard to beat. The design just seemed to incorporate everything I wanted - or thought I wanted.
Unfortunately, while the concept of this device is terrific, the execution had some gaping holes. I used it for about a week, and then gave up and sold it on eBay.
Here's why:
* Phone Dialing: As I said in the title, the Mogul is a really nifty PDA that makes a really, really good electronic daytimer. But it isn't a very good phone. Sliding out the keyboard to dial a number was very cumbersome, and using the touchscreen was maddening. No matter how big the screen is, it is still too easy to press the wrong digits as you dial. So, you either reach for the stylus, which is a pain just to dial a number, or you get used to hitting the backspace key a lot as you type a wrong digit, erase it, and stumble your way through the supposed-to-be-simple process of dialing a phone number. A big drawback of a touchscreen is that there is no tactile feedback to tell you if you have pressed the key. At the end of the day, the process of dialing the phone - one of the most basic things that a cell phone should be good at - was unnecessarily cumbersome.
* Bluetooth: Many of the reviews on the Mogul comment on the poor quality of the Bluetooth. In my experience, they are right. I could hear other people just fine, but the converse was not true: they always complained about the quality of my voice. I read elsewhere that the device shares the same antenna for WiFi and Bluetooth, and this creates problems when both are in use. I don't know if it is true or not, and I don't recall whether there was any marked improvement in the Bluetooth audio quality when the WiFi was off versus when it was on. I just know that the Bluetooth quality was almost always marginal and the ability to talk handsfree is very important to me. I talk frequently on the phone from my home office for business and I like to have my hands free for other tasks. I can't tell you how many times I had to rip the earpiece out of my ear in disgust to just hold the phone up to my mouth so others could hear me. Like that particle the vacuum won't pick up, you keep running it over and over the carpet to give it "one last chance" before finally giving up and picking up the crumb by hand. That's how it was with the Bluetooth on this phone. You keep giving it "one last chance." I don't know about you, but when I call people, they want to hear more than "can you hear me now" 15 times in a conversation.
* Voice Command: This phone is advertised as having voice command. Perhaps if you get it directly from HTC this is true. But if you buy the Sprint version, this functionality has been turned off and you are limited to the older voice tag functionality where you have to use your own voice to record tags for each number or command that you want to launch with voice activation. Sounds OK - until you realize that those 200 numbers in your phone book mean recording 200 voice tags, which takes a lot of time, not to mention memory space. But then comes the real rub: when you try to actually use the voice tags to dial numbers in hands-free fashion when wearing your Bluetooth earpiece, it never - and I mean never - works. Now, imagine the anticipation of being able to use this phone when you are driving, and realizing that it just ain't gonna happen. You pull over, yank out the stylus, dial the number, merge back into traffic and...busy signal...no answer...wrong number...etc. Do that twice and it is two times too many. Ultimately, this lack of handsfree capabilities was the show stopper that caused me to sell the phone rather than keep it. As an aside, there are two kinds of voice activation capabilities in cell phones these days: voice tags and voice command. Voice command is true voice recognition software, similar to the unattended answering systems that many help desks and customer service lines use these days. You know... "press or say 1 for sales, 2 for technical support, 3 for questions about your billing, ..." It recognizes any voice. On the newer phones with voice command, you can say things like "call John Smith...mobile" or "call John Smith...home" or "call 555-1992" and it will WORK, whether directly into the handset or into the Bluetooth earpiece or when using the speakerphone. For whatever reason, the Mogul's implementation of the voice tag recognition features were just not robust. If I have to speak directly into the handset rather than an earpiece, the whole voice recognition thing is sort of a moot point.
* Integrated connector: HTC uses a connector that they call ExUSB, which basically combines audio, charging, and sync functions into a single connector. The unique connector design means that you can plug a standard mini-USB cable into the device for charging and synchronizing to a PC, or can connect headphones that use the proprietary ExUSB style format. The connector on the device is designed to accept both. They also provide a splitter that let you use conventional 2.5mm headsets while simultaneously plugged into a charger or while sync'ing. I thought it was a rather elegant solution, but I really would have preferred two independent connections on the device: a 3.5 mm headset jack and a conventional mini-USB. This was not a big dissatisfier, but rather a minor annoyance to have to carry an extra "gizmo" with me when I wanted to use standard earphones with the device (my ears don't do well with earbud-style headsets...I prefer over-the-ear).
So, as I said, the main dissatisfiers with the Mogul were aspects related to its functionality as a phone. I don't know about you, but I was hoping for something that was a rock solid phone and a pretty good PDA. What I got was a rock solid PDA and a very iffy phone.
But enough of the bashing. Let's talk about what I DID like in this device.
* Intuitive GUI: Because it was a Windows device, the user interface was very familiar. Didn't know quite what to do next? Right click. Expecting the organizer to work like Outlook? It does...because it IS Outlook. Want to open and read WORD docs or EXCEL spreadsheets or even open PDFs from websites you are accessing? No problem. It all works flawlessly. It is basically like having a pocket sized version of your most frequently used desktop tools with you. I did not have to constantly refer to the manual because it was all pretty familiar territory for those who have used Windows for any length of time on their desktop.
* Media Player: The media player was pretty much just a scaled down version of its big brother desktop version, Windows Media Player 10 or 11. And, contrary to what I was told by the HTC help desk, it does support microSD cards larger than 2GB (and Sprint? Don't even go there...their ability to answer simple technical questions like "how large of a memory card can I use?" or "will the microSD slot support the newer SDHC format?" was abysmal). Turns out the device will work with SDHC cards just fine and I corresponded with several people that were using 4GB and 8GB memory cards with no problem. Translation: you can put an awful lot of mp3s, photos, messages, and files on 8 gigs. There is little need to carry a second device like an iPod for multimedia anymore. Also, I really liked the fact that accessing the microSD card was so easy on this device. I now own a Blackberry Pearl and it is considerably more cumbersome to insert and remove the microSD card. As a result, I never remove it unless absolutely necessary. That was not the case with the Mogul and when I wanted to add files, I just took the microSD card out, inserted it into the std. SD-sized adapater, plugged it into my PC, and used it as a removable drive. Super easy.
* Touchscreen: While I did not like the touchscreen for dialing phone numbers, it really was pretty slick for most of the other PDA functionality. Frankly, I found it easier to type most of the time just using a "soft" keyboard that displayed on the screen by pressing an optional menu command than to slide out the keyboard tray and start pounding away with my thumbs.
* Widescreen: There is a nice feature that automatically changes the screen orientation from vertical to horizontal when you slide out the keyboard. But you can also select this manually even when the keyboard tray is hidden. The generous screen size was nice for "day at a glance" functionality when I wanted to see previews of all my appointments for the day, all my tasks, missed calls, e-mails, etc. on a single screen. It was also nice for surfing the web.
* WiFi: I bought this device primarily to use in my home and in my office, both of which have WiFi. Since I don't have an internet data plan with my phone service, it was nice to be able to surf the web for free wherever WiFi was available, whether my house, the plant, or the local Starbucks. This functionality also allowed me to connect to our corporate intranet easily, something that would have been tough using over-the-air internet service from Sprint. At minimum, it would have meant having to tunnel into the corporate intranet using VPN all the time.

(More customer reviews)I own one of these phones for 1/2 yr. already. There is something that needs to be clarified. This is NOT an iPhone. If you're looking for that go to the Apple store and get one for 500$.
This is a PPC (pocket PC) meaning it has WiFi, Windows Mobile 6.1 (latest), the entire Office suite (Excel, Word, PPT) and plenty of other applications are available online. And yeah, it almost look like an iPhone; this is the reason is called a clone of it.
Overall this phone beats the iPhone big time. It might not have the shake control, but who needs it? I need to be able to sit in the airport and work on my files, or read stuff online (for free)-try that on the iPhone.
The price is very low for what it gives. I had no problems with it so far. I'm a person that looks more at the functionality part than at the "let's show off part".

(More customer reviews)I received mine in the end of December. A month is probably not enough to discover all bugs but so far I'm happy with the phone.
First of all, it is really fast. The 1GHz processor does it's job.
The screen resolution is high and the screen size is big enough to surf the web with comfort.
HTC shell is something new to me (I used to have E-ten with Spb Mobile shell) but getting used to it.
Cannot say that I'm impressed with the still picture quality (SE phones have better pictures with less Mpx) but video recording is relatively good. There is no button for shutter so you always have to click on the screen to take picture - not convenient.
I need to charge my phone every second day - that definitely exceeded my expectations, taking into consideration fast processor and big hi-res screen.
The screen uses almost full width of the body, which sometimes causes unexpected clicks when I grab the phone (slowly getting used to it). When browsing e-mails the shell has button "reply to all" on the left side and when you click it, it changes to "send". One time I grabbed the phone and it replied to all and sent an empty message to a huge distribution list. So keep it in mind and be careful ;) I hope there will be a way to protect it somehow.
The phone is bigger than I expected - it's exactly the size of 12oz beer can (you can hide one behind the phone).
The sound level and quality in conversations is excellent. Also, my Highlander hands-free connects very quickly with good sound level.
So far I did not have chance to use built-in GPS. I don't expect anything special comparing to other similar phones.
It does not have a stylus. If you turn the phone, full size keyboard is big enough but.. I think I will get a stylus. At least you need one, when you surf Internet.
Overall - some little flaws, which I found so far, will not be enough to downgrade my 5 star rating. I really enjoy the phone and recommend it to others who is ready to spend [...] bucks on a gadget.

HP iPAQ RX3115 Pocket PC Review

(More customer reviews)My Palm Zire 31 recently died of a traumatic screen impact. I had every intention of replacing it with another of the same, but after poking at handheld display models around town, I decided to upgrade from my Palm to a Pocket PC.
I found the Pocket PC to be aptly named. It really is a pocket sized mini-computer. There's a fossil PC in my basement with less memory, less storage, a slower processor, and absolutely no multi-media capabilities. It cost over $3000 in 1996. The iPaq rx3115 cost 1/10 the price and delivers so much more. I am really impressed.
I chose the rx3115 over the rz1715 because the rx3115 has built in wi-fi and bluetooth. You can buy a wi-fi card for the rz1715, but it costs about $80 and takes up your only SD slot. The rx3115 is $100 more than the rz1715, so it seemed more efficient to just spend the extra $20 on the better model. If you never expect to need wi-fi, go ahead and save the $100. Me, I like being able to access my husband's amazon.com wish list from a Panera Bread parking lot.
The rx3115 starts with the same basic features as any handheld: an outlook compatible calendar, address book, and task list.
In addition to those basics, you get pocket versions of Word and Excel. The built in print manager allows you to print wirelessly from network ready printers.
On top of basic workhorse programs, the rx3115 adds built-in Avantgo software, which allows you to select free news and entertainment channels then download those pages onto the handheld. This means you can read this morning's Wired while standing in line at the DMV.
Then, it takes the multimedia capabilities to a whole new level. You can stream video, music, and photos from a desktop or laptop to your handheld, so if you want to listen to your MP3's from the basement, you don't have to bother copying them onto your SD card. If you want to load an album onto your iPaq, you can do it wirelessly on the way out of the house - no messing with the USB cord needed.
It also acts as a universal remote control, usable on any device with an infrared control. This is a mixed blessing, to say the least. Try to use your powers for good instead of evil, people.
The built in one-touch voice recorder works surprisingly well for (so far) unlimited voice memos. You can manually set the sound quality, so you can get incredibly crisp sound if you're willing to take up a lot of space. The built in speaker is very loud and clear for a device this size.
I like a lot of little details about the rx3115 - namely, the fact that it is slim enough to fit into my tiny little purse when in its hard case, the full size screen (no graffiti area unless you call it up), the ability to flip the screen sideways and back at the push of a button, the very responsive mini-keyboard which is a breeze to pull up or shrink whenever needed, and the one-touch voice memo button.
Finally, it's easy to download additional programs ranging from Age of Empires to ListPro (a very useful and highly recommended program!)
Incidentally, if you don't like the goofy multimedia home screen, you can download other free Pocket PC themes from Microsoft.
Cons:
All that said, this is not the most intuitive device I've ever used. The walk-through is beyond useless. (It tells you things you can do without showing you how.) Finding files can be surprisingly complicated. It looks a lot like Windows XP, but doesn't follow the same well established rules, which can result in some initial confusion.
Some features do not have a back button, so there can be an awkward amount of closing the program and starting over.
Because HP assumes people want this handheld for the sake of watching TV and listening to music, none of the buttons take you to normal handheld destinations, such as calendar, address book, and tasklist. You can reprogram the buttons, but it takes some digging to find how.
The Close and OK button are in the same place, so it's very easy to have half a dozen programs open, all hogging your memory, without realizing it. Separate screen buttons would go a long way to clearing this up.
Basically, you have to spend a little time learning the quirks of the system, but when you do, I find it well worth the time investment.

There are free download sites out there, but I find you get what you pay for. While there are some free gems, but you have to dig pretty far to find them.
Finally, BUY A HARD CASE! Handheld manufacturers all include awful cases and HP is no exception. The screen is much more fragile than you think. One impact and you're out $350 for a handheld - and trust me, once you get hooked, you'll NEED a new one. Amazon sadly lacks good rx3115 hardcases, but I found an excellent one at styluscentral.com. You can find plenty of other cases through Froogle.

(More customer reviews)Pros: The haptic feedback is very responsive, the business card reader works fantastic (take a picture of a business card and it stores it as a new contact), the etiquette mode (face down the phone doesn't ring) is really nice too. Easy sync with e-mail.
Cons: I really didn't like the widget interface, but thankfully it is easy to change and aftermarket options like SPB are great alternatives. It is pretty crucial to remap the task switcher to a key so you can kill programs, otherwise windows slows down.Summary: I have been a long time Treo user, and my last one ran windows mobile instead of the palm system. Windows mobile is really very functional but it tends to leave programs running in the background regardless of what phone you use. Dell addressed this in their PDAs with a task switcher, and I'm very glad to see a similar program employed on the Omnia. Remapping the keys on the side is very simple and makes pulling up the task switcher very easy and keeps windows running smoothly.
Before I go into details on some of the various qualities of this phone I want to emphasize a couple of things. First, while this phone is advertised as having GPS abilities, these are strictly tied to Verizon's Navigator Service, if you're looking to replace your stand alone GPS with a phone and don't want to pay $9.95 a month this phone currently locks you from using any other navigation service. Accordingly the "GeoTagging" feature for photos that is available on the unlocked version of this phone isn't currently available on the Verizon version. I say right now because it is always possible that Verizon will release a firmware update down the road that allows some of these features, but you should know before you buy just what you're getting. That said, still a pretty awesome phone!
The size and weight of the phone is great, it isn't heavy, doesn't weigh down your pockets, but it has some heft to it so you don't feel like you're playing with a toy or something easily broken (that said, I don't think this phone would do well being dropped much). It fits comfortably in my pocket, no bulge. There is an available holster case for it, but personally I've never liked having my phone on my waist.
Typing --
This was where I really expected the most trouble with the phone. I'm used to real keys and so the touch screen keyboard worried me. It's not as effective or quick as my Treo, but I think speed will improve with some practice. That said, typing in portrait mode is very difficult and it is almost a requirement to turn the phone to landscape to type any message. You can change the type method from keyboard to a T9 style number pad which does help vertical typing considerably.
Call Quality --
After all, this is a phone. Calls came through very clearly, and the people on the other end had no trouble hearing me. The speaker phone is loud enough to be heard over ambient noise and does a good job of picking up voice too. The listener on the other end did say they could hear a lot of background noise when on speaker phone so it might be better used in an office setting or someplace where you can limit the amount of noise around you. Still, for as often as anyone uses speakerphone it is more than adequate.
The interface --
I have to give credit to Samsung for their widget interface. I personally don't like it, but I am a creature of habit and know where stuff is on my old phone and just wanted to recreate that. My girlfriend loved the widgets, they were simple enough to her to be able to be comfortable navigating the phone in about half an hour. They might not be the first choice for more serious users, but they do a good job making windows mobile a bit more finger friendly.
Battery Life --
Well this depends... I've enjoyed playing with my phone pretty much nonstop since I got it, and that screen does seem to kill the battery pretty quick. I haven't made it all the way through the day without needing to plug it in, but I've found that if I plug it into my computer while at my desk, or into my car while I'm driving it will do very well staying fully charged. Wouldn't wander off without a power source for more than a day though.
The stylus--
I seriously doubt anyone will use this thing, it might have been a nice addition had they been able to build it into the body of the phone instead but putting it on a little leash just makes it impractical.
The Camera--
I haven't fully explored all of the built in options as far as editing goes, but so far it seems pretty good. The flash isn't a flash in the traditional sense you might be used to. It is a very bright LED that does a good job for subjects that aren't more than maybe 4 or 5 feet away, but you're not going to light up a room with it or anything, keep your expectation reasonable and you'll be pleasantly surprised with it's effectiveness. (The flash also doubles as a flashlight which is an interesting feature). The downside to the LED flash is that I'm having trouble with Red Eye, but that is so easy to edit these days that it's hardly worth mentioning.
All in all... If you're looking for a multimedia phone with smart phone abilities this is a great phone. If you're looking primarily for a phone to handle e-mails then you might find the touch keyboard on this a little aggravating. If you're a seasoned windows mobile user the phone is exactly what you're used to but better, if you're a cross over from Blackberry, or this is your first foray into the smart phone world the widget interface is simple enough you should be comfortable within half an hour or so. The phone has put an emphasis on media playback, and if you're looking for a phone that can handle e-mail but really serves as an mp3 player, decent camera, web-browsing, and occasional video watching, this is about as good as they come.
I would absolutely recommend this phone to anyone looking for a good all in one sort of phone, with the caveat that long e-mails aren't as easy as they might be on other devices. It's still windows, it still slows down some, and it is almost impossible to respond to messages one handed (which I suppose you shouldn't be doing anyway) and I kind of wish they had built in a stylus (could have even made it the FM's ant. since to use that feature you have to plug something else in). All those things in mind I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

(More customer reviews)I love my new Treo Pro. I have been using it for about 2 weeks and already plan to hold on to it for the long haul. Little, history, I have had the Origional Treo, 200, 600, and 650. This is the best of them all. I swtiched two windows mobile 2 years ago because... well the PALM OS is dead in my book. That aside, I really missed the treo. I think palm gets how to build a nice device.
Keyboard: Works great. I find for a thumb keyboard and now with some experience I can fly with it. Personally, I love the thumb keyboard. Perfect for one handed operation with little compromise.
Thin: This thing fits very nicely into the pocket and the screen guard is excellent. I dont even know I have it with me and I never accidently Dial anyone. It fits in the hand wonderfully.
Buttons.. Some devices are going away from having so many buttons. However I like the ability to launch frequent programs. The Pro is great at letting you customize. (You have many hardware buttons and some of them can also be configured to have an Option + Hardware button application bound to them)
Also, you have hardware button access to volume control and wifi.
GPS: Works great. I installed and worked right away.
Power: this device is not a power pig. With normal use I get a good run off it. Mind you, I use applications on it all day along and SMS extensively.
Camera: I havent used it. Frankly, it doesnt matter how many mega pixels any phone has, it still just a phone camera. Quality is never that good. But it is good enough for those fun quick shots.
Dislikes: well, the screen is a standard windows mobile device screen. I was hoping for a new device, especially manufactured by HTC it would have a bit more kick to it. However, its very functional and does what I want. One thing I love is how they built into the keyboard access to the brightness control. This is something all devices should have. Its really hard to increase the brightness if you can read the screen. No problem with the treo.
The ALT key on the keyboard allows you to access characters not on the keyboard, including accented letters for various languages. What I dont like is that its a little window that shows up with about 8 characters show and you scroll to see more. Well there are a lot of characters, it would be better if they just filled the screen so you can quickly find the special character you want.
Windows Mobile Phone Dialer stinks! This is true in my opinion for any windows mobile device. Its a phone, but you have to navigate often 2 to 3 screens deep just to get a phone number. For example, you start typing someones name and the dialer appears. It instantly starts searching for a name. Great! When you select a name by pressing enter, it pulls up their contact screen. (HUH???) yes, you now get to see more info about them. I just want to DIAL the phone number. Long story short, for simple dialing its more complicated than it needs to be. Second, the Windows Mobile phone dialer always seems unresponsive and slow. Its a phone... but the phone is slow. it makes no sense. This is not a critisim against the treo, but if this your first Windows Mobile device you will be a bit disappointed with this.
My Final gripe is that it uses the Micro USB Cable. I dont know why. All I can say is that about 90% of my small electronic gizmos use Mini usb and now I have a new cable standard to deal with. I am sure there is some value to it, but I dont see it. Yes, the connector is smaller, but the cable is still just as thick and just as long. So why I need a thinner (by maybe a few hair widths) I dont know.

(More customer reviews)Having used several smart phones, and used this phone for about 4 months, I believe I can give a fairly educated review. And hopefully save you some money in the process. I was going to do a pros and cons list, but I can't think of many pros other than the fact that it charges off a USB charger.
The supplied software is useless (like most of these things). You can drag and drop from your computer to the phone, but you need to find the drop folders yourself. This takes time (and effort), as the folder set up is overly complex.
Once you have some music on your phone, you'll discover it doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you'll need an HTC headset, which is an extra (was included on the previous model) and too bulky to carry around. You also can't plug it into speakers or your car stereo for the same reason, thus you can't play your music. Other HTC models have headphone jacks, why not this one?
I haven't found a video format the phone will play. If it made the video, it'll play it. Otherwise it won't.
It runs windows mobile. So it does all the things devices running windows do - it freezes, it crashes, and it requires re-booting - FAR too often.
The HTC TouchFLO will cause you most of the frustration found with this phone. It is unable to distinguish between long or short touches, strokes and taps.... Or in fact anything that you'd expect from a touch device. If, for example you scroll through your contacts, the phone will continue to scroll until you stab the screen several times to stop it. By then it's gone past the contact you wanted, and you have to do it again, and again, and again. Eventually you'll give up and use the navigation key - which defeats the point of having a touch screen phone.
The screen is too small for the size of the phone. Navigating the internet is very difficult, so you'll need to enlarge the screen to read anything. Then you're at the mercy of TouchFLO again, as you attempt to move the page to the section you want to read. TouchFLO will activate links you didn't want (as it can't distinguish between taps, and scrolls), and it will zoom and un-zoom constantly (as it can't distinguish taps, double taps, and scrolls). Simply looking at a page is hard enough, doing anything like booking flights or a rental car is impossible.
The default web browser (Opera) doesn't open all web pages correctly, and links often remain inactive (see booking flights above). It also has Explorer, but with the small screen, it's too hard to use, and TouchFLO works differently in explorer. Opera is the lesser of the two evils.
There are no settings to change the screen from landscape to portrait. Landscape would make everything easier (slightly). Once mine opened a web page in landscape (which was great), the next time it was back to portrait. There is no setting to change it manually. I think my experience was just a Microsoft glitch.
It has limited internal memory, with an expansion slot for another micro SD card. However, the default setting is to save to the phone, which fills the memory so quickly it's no longer able to launch some programmes. Once data is saved to the phone there is no way to move it to the SD card, the only option is to delete (or connect to a computer and start the slow painful process of doing it your self). To avoid this you have to manually tell it to save to the card.
If you store data on the card, you have to manually search the card to find it. Essentially you have two storage devices, a phone, and a card. This is a very annoying problem.
Due to the phone's limited internal memory, it can only run one programme at a time and due to the slow processor speed, some programmes takes an eternity to load (Opera, for example can take up to 10 seconds and sometimes more)
The camera is about typical quality for a phone like this. The best thing I can say, is it takes photos. Not good photos, just photos. The metering and white balance are very poor, but so are most phone cameras.
To answer a call, the phone uses a `button' on the screen that you tap (rather than slide like an iphone), meaning you'll answer calls while fishing it out of your pocket. Even when it's your mother inlaw. Or accidently answer calls, even when you haven't heard the phone ring.
When it detects wireless networks, it beeps, and brings up a box asking if you want to join it. If you're in an area with lots of networks, or in a moving vehicle, the shear number of these boxes makes doing anything on the phone impossible, as you have to constantly dismiss them.
Texting is difficult due to the screen size. With the keyboard open you loose most of the screen, and still need to use the stylus to type as the `keys' are still tiny.
There is no Alarm tone. The alarms will only make one solitary beep. Adding an alarm sound, or song to the folder containing the `beep' was fruitless. Mine is totally unreliable and the alarm seems to go off around 80% of the time - you simply can't rely on it.
The recessed screen is an improvement over the previous model, as it makes it more difficult to scratch, however it doesn't come with a pouch (which the previous model did) so it'll get scratched anyway. It does however, come with a screen protector.
As a business tool, this phone misses the mark:
You can't read spread sheets on the screen, so you have to enlarge it. Then if you try to scroll, our friend TouchFLO is unable to distinguish between touching and scrolling, thus it will only highlight cells, it WONT scroll. The only way to do it is to use the stylus to move the tabs at the sides of the page (as any human finger is about 20 times too big to touch the little tabs). You can never see enough of the sheet at once to actually do anything
Word documents are usable, but due to the size of the screen, once you open the keyboard you can't read much. And again due to the limitations of TouchFLO you can move the curser, but you can't scroll through the document with out using the stylus on the tabs.
Email works well, but attachments are downloaded to the phone memory, so it quickly fills up, which then affects other programmes. Deleting emails is the only solution, and as this phone does a full sync with your email server, they're deleted off the server too.
Summary: it's a cheap, very poor imitation of an iphone. So poor that it fails at even the most simple tasks. If you've never used a smart phone before, you may be wowed by the internet and email on the phone and may not notice all of these failings. If you have used one before, this phone will drive you insane. The user interface is VERY poor. HTC has a long way to go to make this phone usable.
Verdict: Save your money. The only reason it gets two stars is that it does usually make and receive phone calls.

(More customer reviews)There is a firmware update for the iPAQ rx1950/1955 that fixes the power on problem when using an SD card. If you go to hp.com, pick Software & Driver Downloads, then type in the product name and continue, then pick Windows Mobile 5.0, you'll see a list of updates for the unit. Right now there is an (OS) ROM update, and a firmware update. The firmware update is the one that fixes this problem, but if you are planning to load the OS/ROM update as well, load that one first, then load the Firmware update. You should always back up all your data before applying an update.
I also had a similar problem when I didn't have the battery cover on and latched just right, but that's OK now too, as long as I don't drop the thing on the ground.

(More customer reviews)I finally got tired of always having both my pockets filled with my h1945 and Sony-Ericsson T610. I've been using the two of these together for a few months, and when I read a little about the h6315 it intriged me. I researched it more and finally decided to buy one. I'm already a T-Mobile customer, so it was just an extra 20$ a month to add the unlimited GPRS (Internet over the cell network). I've had it for about a week, and here are my thoughts.
When researching the device, I found it impossible to find the speed of the processor. Here's why: it's 168mhz. You're thinking "Good Lord, that's slow!" -- but what it really means is AMAZING battery life (I am talking unbelievable). So your first choice is between a fast PDA, or the ability to use it unrestrained for a couple days without having to charge it. The only place I've noticed slow performance is with video (which is nigh-unwatchable) -- other than that, it's performed fine. It was no sweat, I don't really ever use my iPAQ for video. MP3s played fine when you keep your other activities undemanding. The biggest problem with the slow processor is lock-ups. From normal use (I'm not a super power-user, I'd bet) I had to reset the device with my stylus about 3 times a day when it would lock up.
I focus on the speed so much as it was the biggest on-the-fence deciding factor for me when I was looking into buying the 6315. Everything else works flawlessly; The reception is good (better than my T610, that's for sure), sound quality is good (yes, the speaker is quiet because its located on the back of the unit), the screen quality is great (Looks great using the thing at noon on a sunny day in the middle of a field), bluetooth works fine, the wi-fi is very good (with no delay for picking up networks) -- So, the lockups being the only thing that bother me (and like I said -- decide between speed and battery life now), I think this PDA is perfect for me. Resetting it is no problem if it locks up.

-Ipaq has built-in GPS receiver (not software!) the others do not
-Ipaq has two expansion slots (1 mini-SD and 1 SD slot), the others have one
-Ipaq has a 1.3 megapixel camera w/flash
-Ipaq has a terminal services client (allows me to remotely login to my cpu and control it)
CONs
-Ipaq does NOT have built-in WiFi (wireless internet card), the others do
-Ipaq comes with 64 MB of memory (ROM and RAM)
-Ipaq does not come with GPS software
-Ipaq battery life needs major improvements
-Ipaq doesn't support voice dial
NEUTRAL
-Ipaq uses Windows Mobile
One of the main reasons I chose this phone was that all of the CONs were addressable. I could get around the WiFi problem with a WiFi card for my SD slot and I could upgrade my memory by 1 GB with the mini-SD slot. If I didn't want a WiFi card, I could have gotten a 4 GB SD card and used the mini-SD for something else. As for the battery, I could buy another one and the GPS software I could buy as well.
COST
Main point here is that it costs more than just buying the phone.
1) $200 phone: I bought this through my phone carrier (Cingular) and renewed by 2-year plan. I bought it refurbished because I decided paying 400-500 for technology that is still in its infancy is quite ridiculous. When buying a pocket PC (ppc) you pay for much more than just the phone.
2) $32 1GB mini-SD card (Kingston): I bought this on Ebay. This included shipping and taxes.
3) $78 SD WiFi card (Spectec): I also bought this on Ebay. I bought the SDW-821. I bought this for two reasons:
- it supported both 802.11b and g
- it only stuck out of the SD slot aobut 5 mm. All other cards I found stuck out a couple cm.
4) $8 car charger. Bought this on ebay. The phone only comes with a wall charger and a cradle.
5) $150 GPS software (Navteq)
6) $8 extra battery
7) $50 Bluetooth (handsfree) headset MS850 - DO NOT GET THIS because the MS810+ series are the only Bluetooth headsets not supported by the hw6515. You can make calls fine, but the connection gets dropped on incoming calls.
Total: $528
This total was with a lot of bargain shopping. Be careful when buying on Ebay because there are a lot of people selling knockoff technology being shipped from factories in China that break after a couple weeks.
NOTES:
-I only pay 39.99/mo for my cell phone plan.
-I do not pay for internet usage fees because I use my WiFi card for internet access. There are free hotspots jumping up all over the place and hopefully Google gets their way and blankets the US with free wireless internet! I also have a T-mobile hotspot account for places that support this on my travels.
-If you get this and the GPS software you do NOT have to pay Cingular every time you use it. The GPS software and the GPS receiver work independently of Cingular so you never have to worry about getting billed extra by using this.
-Battery life for this phone given the technology is OK. I have to recharge once a night so long as I don't use BlueTooth or WiFi too often
-BlueTooth uses about 5% of my battery for every half hour I have it connected to my MS850 headset
-WiFi card uses about 10% of my battery for every half hour I am surfing the internet
-The Windows platform allows for very good multi-tasking
-I'm a UNIX/Linux fan but at least windows Mobile comes with Word/Excel so you can appease your mgmt team
-You can use .NET and Java apps (games and programs)
-Have to reboot the device on occasion because memory does not get freed up as it should
-After closing applications, they aren't actually closed, you have to shut them down in Memory->Running Programs
-Sound quality actually exceeded my expectations
-Bluetooth connections have been extremely stable
-I live in rural Northern California and have not had any problems with dropped calls or having bad reception. It seems to have the same reception as my Motorola V551.

HTC Advantage 7501 (Unlocked) Review

(More customer reviews)I got mine about 3 weeks ago and have been running it through its paces ever since. Before getting an X7501, you have to realize that this thing is really a mini-laptop/mega-smartphone. It was made for a person who prefers a single device with convergent technologies, the more the better. Besides making calls, I use it to navigate with its built in GPS, surf the web with Opera and/or Explorer via HSDPA/WiFi and run all kinds of windows mobile apps (from a TI-89 emulator to XCOM: UFO Defense). I have plenty of space for several GB worth of music/movies and the 3 megapixel camera is nice (especially the panoramic feature). Oh, and I can cut and paste text too, unlike a certain other iDevice I know... hihi.
Pros:
-The SIM chip from my old AT&T 8125 worked fine with no issues. I was immediately able to access the 3G/HSDPA network (I had been stuck with just EDGE before on the 8125). I have used the X7501 between Princeton NJ and Washington DC with no issues to 3G availability. Subjectively, transfer rates seem to be noticeably quicker than EDGE (several times faster). I had issues with slow Google Maps loading on EDGE, but HSDPA makes the application functional and practical to use while driving.
-WiFi connected just fine. WEP encryption was straightforward and easy to configure.
-Bluetooth headset works fine, but sound quality varies depending on the headset. I use a plantronics voyager 510 for calls (good sound) and Southwing 505 for music (some noise). You can also answer calls using the speaker phone or an included wired microphone. The microphone jack is 1/16" so you can use regular headphones with it to listen to music, but you will have to get an adapter for regular wired microphones or just go with bluetooth.
-I can't tell you how nice it is to have a 5" diagonal screen to surf the web and watch video with. The screen is even big enough to edit Excel and Word documents without going blind.
-There was a nice attachment cable included that allows you to output to a Monitor or TV if it has the connector.
-8GB microdrive AND miniSDHC slot. The 2GB card I have worked fine. I'll have to get a 4GB card to test the high capacity. 8GB+miniSDHC means I have effectively unlimited storage and can transfer files easily.
-WM6 has a feature which now allows applications to truly close when you press X button. No more of that annoying need to go into settings/memory/close all hassle.
-So far, most applications I loaded onto the X7501 work fine:
TCPMP (The Core Pocket Media Player) works. I was able to load and watch an .avi movie. I'll have to watch a long movie all the way through during my next flight out of town to test for stuttering midway through.
Skype installed and worked just fine. No complaints.
OctroTalk (for free GoogleTalk) works fine. No complaints.
VTI Pocket Emulator (free TI-89 scientific calculator emulator) works well. Slightly laggy, but usable. I was able to take derivatives and integrate functions just like on a normal TI-89. Not sure about loading programs to do Laplace transforms etc, but that's hardly a concern for 99.99% people.
GSPlayer was able to play Shoutcast music streams without a problem. HSDPA allows for higher bitrates than I was normally able to listen to using EDGE.
XCOM: UFO Defense (free old PC turn based game ported to WM) worked, although I had to switch to vertical mode.
-Comes with both Windows Explorer and Opera installed. I prefer Opera's tabular browsing and have been using it almost exclusively.
-Battery is removable, so having a spare battery is possible and even recommended. Battery life seems "okay", but I have not done a real runtime test yet. For the most part, I have had it plugged in a lot (either my car adapter for GPS or my laptop at work to stream music). WiFi and bluetooth do seem to run the battery down quickly. I wouldn't count on more than 3 hours of continuous browsing and streaming media.
-Using a universal USB charging port allows for a lot of recharging options and is compatible with my other portable electronics so I carry fewer plugs/cables. Works with my emergency usb charger.
-Nice complimentary leather wallet, screen protector and extra pen included. Small stuff counts!
Cons:
-Out of the box the intro screen says, "Test Only - Not for Sale". A little disconcerting but the unit works fine, so I plan on keeping it. I ordered my X7501 through Amazon a month before release. Hopefully later units don't have this.
-No stand alone GPS software like TomTom or iNavigator. It has Google Maps (which uses the GPS to track and show your location but this requires a data link (HSDPA or WiFi) to download maps, plot routes and get traffic info. It also has TeleNav Navigator (which is a subscription based payware GPS nav system)
-iNavigator 2.1.2 GPS software wouldn't recognize the 8GB microdrive. This was disappointing, but I am thinking of getting OCN6 to run on it since their website claims WM6/X7500 compatibility.
-FreeOTFE(Free On The Fly Encryption) wouldn't install correctly. I couldn't create an encrypted volume. I'll have to do more research to see what the problem is or if it's a PEBKAC error.
-There's no way to get around it. The X7501 is bulky. It fits fine in a pair of cargo pants, but is uncomfortable in a pair of khakis or jeans. It just barely fits. Get a bluetooth headset. You look like an idiot holding this to your ear.
-No vibrate mode to receive calls.
-The VueFlow operation seems kind of gimmicky to me. Basically, the screen will pan up/down/left/right by varying degrees depending on how much you tilt the screen. There's potential here, but it often moves when I don't want it to, so I've disabled it.
Parting Thoughts:
The HTC Advantage X7501 does everything it is advertised to do and is a significant upgrade from a 8125 or even 8525. I chose this over the iPhone because I prefer more functionality when I travel and work. Thats exactly what I got, but at the cost of size and weight. I'll definitely be keeping my other older (and smaller) cell phone around to carry if I want to travel light. On the road however, this is the king of PDAs. I haven't seen anything out there that has the same set of features in one package.
