(More customer reviews)You can find a great phone or a great PDA, but combine them and even the best smartphone will fall short in some respect. Understanding which tradeoffs fit your profile is the key. You will appreciate the XV-6800 if you: 1.) Have ever been called a nerd; 2.) value an endlessly customizable productivity and entertainment gadget; and, 3.) can live with okay-not-great phone functionality. On the other hand, if you are a power phone user (and/or prefer a simple interface to one with exposed complexity), you may find a simpler cell phone a better choice.
A WORD ABOUT THICKNESS
There's a widely-accepted myth that phones with slide-out keyboards are thick because of, well, the keyboard. It's not true. Like cell phone screens, they're wafer-thin: It's the battery (typically located beneath the keys) that's to blame. Because consumers comparison shop for long talk/standby time and power-draining features (e.g., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth), hefty batteries are a necessary evil.
The XV-6800 is a case in point. At about the size of an elongated Altoids tin, and weighing 5.8 ounces, it is objectively neither large nor heavy. Yet at 1.2 ounces per cubic inch of volume, pick it up and "solid" comes to mind. It's like the old trick question, "Which weighs more: a pound of feathers, or a pound of iron?" Anyway, something to keep in mind about weight and form factor.
AS A CELL PHONE
Strictly as a cell phone, the XV-6800 is competent. Reception is good, especially given the internal antenna. Voice quality is okay; speakerphone volume could be better. Power phone users may prefer a device with real (not graphical) keys; getting the keypad screen back on to input numbers or navigate phone trees is often an extra step. After the voice speed dial function kept popping up for no apparent reason, I disabled it.
SCREEN
The QVGA (320x240 pixel) touch screen is bright (adjustable in 10 increments), with good contrast, and rich color. At 2.8 inches, there's less "screen door" effect than with larger QVGA screens. Web pages render well, and even the tiny text found on non-mobile optimized web pages is quite readable.
KEYBOARD
About a second after the back-lit QWERTY keyboard clicks open, the screen switches from portrait to landscape viewing mode. Keystrokes offer positive tactile feedback and a muted click to let you know you typed a letter. After a couple of minutes getting used to the function key, you will find yourself thumb-typing away. If you simply can't deal with tiny keyboards, you can always summon the familiar graphical keyboard and hunt-and-peck using the stow-away collapsible stylus.
OPERATING SYSTEM & SOFTWARE
The phone ships with Windows Mobile 6.0 operating system (OS) and Windows Mobile 6 Professional. The OS is stable and seems more crash-free than previous versions, and is helped by the device's abundant memory. Included are pleasantly usable mobile versions of Adobe Reader, Excel, Word (intuitive, with lots of formatting options), and PowerPoint. The Internet Explorer Mobile browser works well (there is a handy launch button top right on front), with websites downloading quickly where the Verizon EV/DO data network is available.
Before considering this device a laptop replacement, though, see if creating spreadsheets and composing documents on a 2.8-inch screen is an appealing idea for you. I don't mind it, but if you are moving toward reading glasses and large text, you may be happier knowing they're there to read email attachments.
RANDOM SETUP TIP
After extensive troubleshooting and re-installs, the device was still not recognized by my PC. Here's what worked: Start > Settings > Connections tab > USB to PC. I then un-checked "Enable advanced network functionality." If it doesn't do the trick, you can re-enable it and move on.
CAMERA
The two megapixel (1600 x 1200) camera takes pretty good pictures. The many edge-of-screen icons suggest daunting complexity, but they are actually an advantage because you won't have to navigate through pages of menus just to check settings. There is slight shutter delay (this is won't replace a serious camera), but for a smartphone, it's better than you would expect. One other note: What looks like an exposed lens is actually a clear and fairly hard lens cover. It is slightly recessed and seems unlikely to scratch.
CONCLUSION
Overall, the XV-6800 is a powerful, flexible, configurable device that will be more rewarding for a tech-savvy user than for someone who thinks of it as "a cell phone with extras."

(More customer reviews)Well, finally a windows based phone, with real key-dialpad outside, full qwerty keyboard, big touch screen... Feature wise this phone has it all that I've ever wanted... real dialing keys were a must for me (hate the soft keys on phones like XV6700, you can never "feel" them and always have to look on the phone to know where to press), full keyboard that you can operate with two thumbs, touch screen (lately there has been a slew of smart phones without touch screens). Everything else typical windows mobile phones usually have by virtue of being windows phones or by virtue of Verizon service (calendar, tasks, office, games, auto-syncing, etc).
To me, its all about hardware of the phone, its useability and performance. Because on the inside, all windows phones are created mostly equal.
This phone has a few minor and major annoyances.
Annoyances:
1) Inability to charge the phone when connected via USB cable. This is annoying two-fold. First of all, because battery is drained faster when the phone is connected to PC, 2nd of all, because phone constantly goes to sleep when its not being charged and thus installation of software can fail unless you keep the phone active (or change power settings temporarely). Obviously, using the phone as a modem for your laptop aint gonna work for long periods of time either.
Thankfully, this major annoyance can be resolved with about $30-40 bucks extra, where one can buy a special crade to charge battery and sync at the same time.
2) No standard mini-USB connectors. A modern phone w/o mini-USB interface in this day and age? I had to buy all new cables for my car, for my work, etc. Annoying!
3) Button placement and stylus placement. One definately has to get used to this. Some of the button placed tend to get pushed more often than they should be...
4) A flap on the power connection. It's bad enough that the connection is not mini-USB, its yet more annoying that the connection is covered with a flimsy-feeling flap that needs to be unhooked and rehooked everytime.
5) Lack of carrying case or pouch or clip. Once again, this can be fixed with extra $$$.
Now, on to the good stuff about this phone, which by a landslide overwhelms the bad:
1) Windows Mobile 6 fixes alot of annoying things that were available in WM5 with older phones. No more random turn-ons, less lockups, alot more options in various software components, etc.
2) Phone is fast.
3) Opening of the sliding keyboard feels solid, snappy, well made.
4) Keyboard has been thought thru well. Keypad works in both states (with opened and unopened keyboard), reset button is easy to reach when needed, keys are easy to press. Overall, nice!
5) Standard and extended batteries are both included! I guess this makes up for the lack of charging usb connection. Extended battery lasts long time. I typically get to the half of the extended battery after 3 days of moderate useage (wireless syncing every 60 minutes, 20 mins of conversation per day, and few hours of playing Bubbles per day)
6) As a phone it performs much better than my previoux XV6700. Obviously, WM6 software is better, but also it definately has better reception vs XV6700.
Overall, my biggest complain with XV6700 and other phones like it, that they were a PDA first and a phone second. Samsung has finally made a PDA Phone that works equilly well as both.

HP iPAQ RX3115 Pocket PC Review

(More customer reviews)My Palm Zire 31 recently died of a traumatic screen impact. I had every intention of replacing it with another of the same, but after poking at handheld display models around town, I decided to upgrade from my Palm to a Pocket PC.
I found the Pocket PC to be aptly named. It really is a pocket sized mini-computer. There's a fossil PC in my basement with less memory, less storage, a slower processor, and absolutely no multi-media capabilities. It cost over $3000 in 1996. The iPaq rx3115 cost 1/10 the price and delivers so much more. I am really impressed.
I chose the rx3115 over the rz1715 because the rx3115 has built in wi-fi and bluetooth. You can buy a wi-fi card for the rz1715, but it costs about $80 and takes up your only SD slot. The rx3115 is $100 more than the rz1715, so it seemed more efficient to just spend the extra $20 on the better model. If you never expect to need wi-fi, go ahead and save the $100. Me, I like being able to access my husband's amazon.com wish list from a Panera Bread parking lot.
The rx3115 starts with the same basic features as any handheld: an outlook compatible calendar, address book, and task list.
In addition to those basics, you get pocket versions of Word and Excel. The built in print manager allows you to print wirelessly from network ready printers.
On top of basic workhorse programs, the rx3115 adds built-in Avantgo software, which allows you to select free news and entertainment channels then download those pages onto the handheld. This means you can read this morning's Wired while standing in line at the DMV.
Then, it takes the multimedia capabilities to a whole new level. You can stream video, music, and photos from a desktop or laptop to your handheld, so if you want to listen to your MP3's from the basement, you don't have to bother copying them onto your SD card. If you want to load an album onto your iPaq, you can do it wirelessly on the way out of the house - no messing with the USB cord needed.
It also acts as a universal remote control, usable on any device with an infrared control. This is a mixed blessing, to say the least. Try to use your powers for good instead of evil, people.
The built in one-touch voice recorder works surprisingly well for (so far) unlimited voice memos. You can manually set the sound quality, so you can get incredibly crisp sound if you're willing to take up a lot of space. The built in speaker is very loud and clear for a device this size.
I like a lot of little details about the rx3115 - namely, the fact that it is slim enough to fit into my tiny little purse when in its hard case, the full size screen (no graffiti area unless you call it up), the ability to flip the screen sideways and back at the push of a button, the very responsive mini-keyboard which is a breeze to pull up or shrink whenever needed, and the one-touch voice memo button.
Finally, it's easy to download additional programs ranging from Age of Empires to ListPro (a very useful and highly recommended program!)
Incidentally, if you don't like the goofy multimedia home screen, you can download other free Pocket PC themes from Microsoft.
Cons:
All that said, this is not the most intuitive device I've ever used. The walk-through is beyond useless. (It tells you things you can do without showing you how.) Finding files can be surprisingly complicated. It looks a lot like Windows XP, but doesn't follow the same well established rules, which can result in some initial confusion.
Some features do not have a back button, so there can be an awkward amount of closing the program and starting over.
Because HP assumes people want this handheld for the sake of watching TV and listening to music, none of the buttons take you to normal handheld destinations, such as calendar, address book, and tasklist. You can reprogram the buttons, but it takes some digging to find how.
The Close and OK button are in the same place, so it's very easy to have half a dozen programs open, all hogging your memory, without realizing it. Separate screen buttons would go a long way to clearing this up.
Basically, you have to spend a little time learning the quirks of the system, but when you do, I find it well worth the time investment.

There are free download sites out there, but I find you get what you pay for. While there are some free gems, but you have to dig pretty far to find them.
Finally, BUY A HARD CASE! Handheld manufacturers all include awful cases and HP is no exception. The screen is much more fragile than you think. One impact and you're out $350 for a handheld - and trust me, once you get hooked, you'll NEED a new one. Amazon sadly lacks good rx3115 hardcases, but I found an excellent one at styluscentral.com. You can find plenty of other cases through Froogle.

Seidio Innocase Surface for AT&T HTC Tilt (Black) Review

Fitting over the AT&T Tilt is a snap, well, couple of snaps to get the little extensions to clip onto sides of the phone, and it's done. It is not any more bulkier than the original phone, but adds a layer of protection. Very smooth texture. I have the maroon color, looks great - one more best thing: it doesn't look like a cheap plastic cover. And instead of opening a case to take out the phone, you can slide open for the keypad anytime you want.
Did notice when I slide the phone back to tuck away the keypad, had to push a tiny little more at the end to get it to completely close. Just a slight observation.
My only complaint is that they don't make same kind of cases for laptops :)

HTC Touch Phone (Sprint) Review

And my recent purchase of the touch is something I definably will not be regretting three to six months later when something newer comes out. After doing some research on specs and capabilities on this phone, the I-Phone, Tilt, and some other smart phones that were cheaper but offered similar capabilities, I must say this is the one I would recommend everyone. I've been a long subscriber of Sprint, and was never impressed on how their phones ranked with other service providers, specially since sprint tends to be slightly more expensive than others.
However, after one week of owning this phone I must say that this phone is hands down better than the iphone. I can do much more with this device, and I am able to purchase anything else I might need for whatever I may want to do or need to do. The software is somewhat complex for those who may lack the technical knowledge (no offense), but if you sit down and read the instructions throughly you will find out that it is not that bad, and once you get the hang of it you can actually function around the phone without any restraints.
The camera is adequate, and I say this because I have a digital camera and I did not purchase a phone simply to take picture. But overall, it performs well, and the fact that I can take panoramic pictures and stitch them together is really something I did not expect from this phone. The sports setting which takes 5 shots in a row is extremely useful if you're dealing with kids. The browser is nothing fancy to brag, but I acquired a software to search and view videos on the web (mostly youtube), and I am able to save, bookmark, etc. Most popular websites are now joining the mobile web requirements, enough said on that.
The phone is bluetooth, and the media player actually plays the music much louder than my previous phone through my bluetooth Motorola HT820 stereo headset. The sync function is extremely easy to set up. The touch screen feature is really nice, specially since you can write on the screen with the stylus and the software will type the words for you; this alone speeds up your typing speed if in IM or perhaps typing a memo on the mobile Microsoft word software.
Email accounts are easily set up (yahoo, hotmail, gmail, work email, school, etc) I have them all, and they are sync periodically as I set them.. again this is soo easy once you get the hang of it. Google maps is quite nice, if you're upgrading from a regular phone to a smart phone. The built in memory on the device is adequate, but you can expand it with a micro SD card (up to 4GB), and I recommend you do this and set up the phone to use only that memory (install all the software that did not come with the phone on the memory card instead of the device).Feb 2009 update:
After using this phone for over a year, I was starting to find it out of style and lacking some functionality in comparison to the newer phones that are going on sale. And just as I was getting to upgrade again, I found a way to flash the operating system and upgrade everything on the phone to the point that I was amazed by the capabilities of the device. GPS locked so much faster, I installed a different browser to compete with the safari of the IPHONE, and added so many other applications that are extremely useful, not to mention that I also changed the interface so that it looks just like the newer model from HTC (Diamond). Believe me when I say this, this phone can have soo much potential for those of us who like to tweak electronics and find out what else can we do with it. The fact that is a windows mobile device allows you to do all this stuff, so keep that in mind. But I still want to point out that this device is by far not meant for somebody that is not savvy with electronics.

AT&T Tilt Phone, Silver (AT&T) Review

(More customer reviews)I was lucky enough to hear that this phone had been released just days after I had bought the 8525 to replace a previous broken phone. There seemed to be some confusion with the AT&T sales people, since currently with rebates it sells for less than the 8525 and some internal memo seems to have them telling customers that a different update to the 8525 is still coming. Make no mistake, this is the upgrade for the 8525 and it's a beauty! Since there's pretty good specs and basic data on what the phone includes on the Amazon product page, I'll just run down some improvements over the 8525:
1. New sleek black casing. It's not as slippery so less likely to be dropped!
2. When keyboard is out, you can tilt the screen up. This makes it particularly nice for watching videos on a plane or using as an alarm clock, etc.
3. GPS built in. You can pay for the AT&T Telenav...or just load on your own navigation software like TomTom. More on this later...
4. Double the memory! One of my biggest issues with windows mobile phones was they had so much less usable memory on the device. I do tend to load a lot of applications and many I really prefer to run on the device, not on an external card. So yeah for this!
5. 3 MP camera (up from 2) with autofocus. No light to use as a flash though (not that it was all that great anyway!)
6. Dual processor and graphics accelerator for improved performance
7. Windows Mobile 6
Okay, so those are the improvements in a nutshell. Lets look at this sucker in more detail.
First, the package from AT&T is pretty bare bones. You get the phone, an extra stylus, screen protector, AC charger, USB sync cable, and the usual software CD with ActiveSync and user's manual. That's basically it! There's no case, no headphones, not even a headphone adapter. This device does support stereo bluetooth headphones, so a lot of people will probably get those instead, but to not even include a basic slip case? Pretty cheap for a device in this price range.
The device itself is really pleasing to look at. The front is actually considerably darker to the eye than the photos on this page, more like a dark grey than silver, which I think is quite nice looking (see the photo I uploaded). The back does show fingerprints a bit, but it has a nice feel to it and is easy to gripe. The back however is rather challenging to get off. There's no release as on the previous model, you just have to use brute force. The speaker is on the back and can give pretty decent volume. Also on the back is the connector for an external GPS antennae (generally not needed unless you are in something like an RV).
The keyboard is a full QWERTY keyboard, and fairly nice and tactile. Also has a nice light-up feature which can automatically detect light (or you can tweak to always activate). The number keys are colored grey which makes them easier to find and the blue switch key is completely blue rather than just having a blue dot. However, the keyboard slides out the opposite direction of the 8525 so if you used that phone, you may find yourself trying to slide this the wrong way all the time! This does also put the buttons and stylus to the left...not good for most of us that are right-handed. I also wish there was a way to lock caps and/or numbers on. You have to hold down their respective shift keys which really slows me down sometimes. Also, when fully tilted up, the soft keys at the top of the keyboard are very hard to press as they are somewhat under the screen.
Now on to the buttons. There don't seem to be as many buttons on this model and they aren't as easy to customize in general. You have a dedicated Push-to-Talk button that won't let you remap it, frustrating if you never use this service. There is no longer a Comm Manager button either, which I really liked, to pull up my setting for bluetooth, wifi, etc. and turn them on and off. The internet and email buttons are now down at the bottom with all the other buttons. I expect some people will like this, I personally liked them being separate as I now often have to look to make sure I'm pushing the right button. It's not the greatest layout if you like to play games on your device. I do love the real scroll wheel (not a jog dial). Once you have a device with just jog, you'll know how nice true scroll is! The power button is really flush with the device and unlikely you will accidentally turn the device on while in a pocket or purse. Unfortunately this does mean it is not exactly easy to find that power button when it's dark out! Luckily sliding out the keyboard will also turn it on. By default the sliding makes a little chiming sound, but you can turn that off.
Built-in GPS is pretty cool to have. It does take awhile to fix the satellites, there is a utility to help with that and others you can download for free. Once you have a signal, you can use it with TeleNav, something like TomTom or with various online free service like Microsoft Live or Google Maps. Lots of cool options to make use of this. However, if you want to use this to replace the navigation in your car, there's one big issue with this device, and that's the screen. It doesn't use a transreflective screen which makes it very difficult to see in bright light. This is generally not a huge problem for typical use, but if you want to use this in your car to do navigation, it may be too difficult to see from any distance if light is hitting it. You can turn up the brightness all the way but on a sunny day, you may still have problems. Make sure your navigation has spoken text directions or you may end up lost!
The new camera does have the neat autofocus which you can lock on your subject before shooting the photo. It's like most phone cameras in that it is rather slow and can't handle a moving subject. For relatively stationery ones, it's actually fairly decent. Won't beat your digicam, but it's usable in a pinch.
Now on to the operating system and software, this phone is using the new Windows Mobile 6. Not a huge different here from 5, biggest changes are in the messaging which handles Exchange servers a lot better, HTML emails, etc. Many people in the past used 3rd party products for email, WM6 actually does a pretty decent job with them now. It also has the new Windows Live service which lets you do instant messaging, maps, location searches, traffic, weather, news, etc. I've only just started playing with some of these features, but it looks really good. Just type in a location, search for something like a nearby restaurant and you can pull up not only the address and phone...but get directions and a map there as well! And yes, GPS is integrated. It's pretty cool. Other various MS functions like hotmail and IM are part of Windows Live as well. Pocket IE is still pretty crappy. I prefer Opera Mobile, but the free Opera Mini works pretty well for a lot of people as well.
Now for the big negative...AT&T bloatware. Apparently with all this free memory, they saw no reason to leave it for the user, instead filling it with all these extra paid-for AT&T services and horrible game demos (time out in something like 1 minute!) Luckily there are a couple ways around this. You can soft reset the device when it starts loading all these extra apps on and skip over it that way. Or if you are a really savvy techie type like me, you can flash the device with the original HTC ROM which is much nicer than the plain AT&T one. You do need to really spend some time learning how to do this and of course it invalidates the warranty. But you'll have a really slick device afterwards and a lot more free memory. It has a nice black theme that matches the color of the device and a really nice Today screen plugin. The dialer is much improved and easier to use as well. Google the xda-developers site for more info (again, not for the technically challenged!)
I'm the type of user that plays around with a new device for weeks trying to find just the right combinations of addon programs and utilities to get it working just the way I like it. I've found all kinds of neat programs such as one that lets you configure all the buttons (adding commands for things like double-press or long-press) and another that lets you create custom profiles like a regular cell phone, but controlling things like bluetooth/Wifi being on and changing volumes, etc. Set your profiles to switch at certain times of the day or for certain types of appointments, there's so much you can control if you want to. I was hoping with the faster processor it would load up my Today screen a bit faster with everything I have on there, but it still takes awhile on the first load to render everything. Be careful though as all software does not support WM6 yet. I found that clock/alarm programs in particular did not play well with it.
There's so much you can do with a Windows Mobile phone, I can't begin to list it all here. You can do streaming video (watch YouTube), use Skype or other VOIP services, even listen to your entire music collection from home using media sharing. Instant messaging, you can even use remote desktop! I even found a website that lets me stream my XM radio channels. Pretty amazing stuff.
You'll definitely want to drop by the xda-developers Kaiser forums (google it) and check out some of the applications available there. Top of the list is the Kaiser Tweak which you install and run in order to adjust a lot of the somewhat annoying default settings on the Tilt. Top of the list is the often-mentioned issue with the screen turning off during a call. Run this app and you will never have that problem again.
