(More customer reviews)Out of the box, the first thing I noticed about this case was the absolutely vibrant and gorgeous color. Some red paint jobs look cheap and just do not capture the essence of the color. You ever notice how some car companies just do not get red right, but others do? This is a dark garnet which uses light reflection well to even give the impression of gradient changes. Tap the cover and you hear hard plastic. Hold it and you feel a smooth surface that is not too rubbery and sticky, but certainly not slippery. A lot of people say they do not like the Case Crown label on the back, but especially with the garnet case color, the silver metalic look of the label adds a touch of class to the otherwise economical case. If you do not like the label, you can just peel it off. There will ber that empty recessed space there, however.
This is my first iPhone and the only case I have ever used, for a total of 2 days. I did also get the black one, but have not even tried it. There is the felt inside the case that is supposed to protect your phone from scratches and the two shell pieces fit nicely even with a screen protector on it so long as it is applied correctly; I had to get another screen protector. :) The case has a nice solid feel to it. The cut outs are appropriately sized so do not interfere with anything such as the power cord or head phones, etc. This case will not offer up the protection of something like the Otter Box cases, but I do think that you can rely on it for daily use where there is not much of a chance that it will be exposed to high impact contact; I think it will be fine for the occasional drop. The lip on this is not too deep, but should still offer protection for your screen unless it falls on some protruding object.
I think I chose one hell of a product as my first case for my first iPhone. I only with this particular line of Case Crown cases came in more colors. I have read reviews of other CC iPhone cases(without the felt lining I assume) where people have said that the the back of their phone got scratched. I will provide updates if any are needed about the paint (whether it peels or not) and the protection the case provides.
Update 11/28/09
I have had these two cases for a month now. They continue to hold up. The vibrancy of the red as dulled tremendously, however. Nevertheless, the cases continue to do what I need them to do and have taken a pretty standard beating. I have not dropped the phone, so still cannot assess how well the case would handle a drop. It has been through general wear and tear so it has scuffs on it, which is fine. I mix and match the cover pieces to give the appearance of having a whole new case. People like the large red cover / small black cover pairing and often think that this is an original one piece case. I still give this five stars.
Update 1/30/10
Well, I am happy to say that I check my iPhone a couple of times a week to see if the back has scratches on it and there are none. However, the chrome molding has suffered several small scratchess, mostly at the top and the bottom of the phone. If you take off the covers and run your finger along the underside of the lip you will feel that it is quite sharp. I got these covers because they got good reveiews and, with the felt inside, there was less of a chance that they would scratch the back of the phone and, of course, because they came at a great price. If I had known that there was also a chance of the molding getting scratched, I would have thought twice as I wanted to keep this phone in as prestine condition as I could for a possible re-sale. I still like these cases since they do what I need them to do. Just want everyone to know that there is the risk of suffering scratches on the molding. If you can live with that, then I still reccommend these cases.
Final Update 11/25
I dropped this down a star because, as much as I was hoping that it would not be the case, the back of my phone has multiple scratches on it. Ironically, almost all of them are on the Apple logo, therefore they are quite visible. I have to admit, though, I have dropped my phone multiple times. Still, a case should not cause scratches this bad. As others have said, the rubberized coating started peeling badly, but to be honest, it really is not much of a big deal for me. Like I said previously, I like that the case is thin, inexpensive, and so long as it keeps its gloss - which is not for long -it is pretty,
If you get this, you will certainly need to use a screen protector. I took mine off, not a good idea as I got several scratches on my 3GS. Luckily, Apple had to replace the screen recenlty for another reason, and because of the scratches I got while useing the CrownCase case, I decided this time to go with Otterbox, since at the moment they are practically the same price.
If you are a sure-handed person, you do not plan to re-sell your phone, you prefer a thin case, and/or you are OK with scratches, which will actually be covered up by the case, I would still recommend this one. I do not like that I have scratches on my phone, but realistically speaking, unless I had an Otterbox from the start, scratches were probably inevitable no matter waht case I chose.
