Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)Bear in mind that this is an absolute entry-level Android smartphone. You're likely to be happy with it as long as you don't compare it to the iPhone 4 or the high end Androids such as Samsung Vibrants. Lower expectations will make a happier user. I got the phone unlocked for two hundred bucks directly from T Mobile. I bought it as a temporary tide over until someone other than ATT offers the iPhone (yes, those murmurs about lousy service were indeed true based on a first hand experience).
My comments are about the phone itself, although I must admit that T-mobile's pricing on plans and the ten dollar Android data plan (200 Mb/ month) is an excellent value. The phone is well built and better than I was expecting. The OS is the most recent version of Android (I've been an iphone user in the past). The battery holds a charge decently (lasts most day under moderate use). Android turned out to be much more polished than iPhone fans had led me to believe. The phone does have a plasticy feel but not in a cheapo way. The GPS is snappy-fast and the Google apps (Places, shopper) are awesome. Camera picture quality is very average and feels like it was taken on a camera phone (a huge picture quality downgrade from even the first generation iPhone). Out of the box, the phone is going to feel a bit slow...but a few tweaks helped a lot.
I've found the phone to be a lot more responsive if you do two things: Replace the startup screen with the free Launcher Pro and install a limited number of apps on the phone. The stock email client is also clumsy and slow; try replacing it with K-9 mail. After these changes the phone is very usable. And the 3G speed on TMO is impressive (1,900 kbps down and 400 kbps up)! Much faster than an iphone 4 that I had for a few days and had to return due to too many dropped calls.
My one gripe about the phone is that its ability to hold a Wifi connection is terrible. After a lot of fiddling around, I finally gave up on that part and disabled Wifi. Accesories such as cases were hard to find, and the few sold by TMO were overpriced. I ordered a case directly from the big auction site and a micro-USB cable (one comes in the box; this is a spare one for charging in my office) on Amazon for about two bucks. All in all, this is a good value and a choice that I do not regret.
