(More customer reviews)These Boxwave Minisync retractables seem like a workable solution to a major gripe I have with PDA and other cables: the supplied cords are WAY too long for simply carrying around.
Unfortunately, the Minisync cables aren't very sturdy - after a couple weeks they start to show wear where the cord meets the hard plastic ends. (Yes, even when you only handle the cord as the manufacturer insists). About a month or not much longer than that you will see metal wire fraying out from the hard plastic USB ends at the point where the soft cable enters. Warranty is only 90 days, plus return postage is on you.
I have heard reports of these cables shorting out devices after they begin fraying, but my experience is only that they begin to flake out and only work occasionally. It's still a possibility that I may fry my $600 Treo with this, but it hasn't happened yet. However, it's going into the garbage as soon as I can locate another cable to travel with.
My dream is that eventually manufacturers will just include six-inch cords plus a USB extension of "x" number of feet with all new devices. Maybe it costs them an additional penny or two to ship that way, but it would give US the flexibility of carrying whatever length of cable we need to do the job, and not have to resort to aftermarket cables like the Minisync that don't hold up to the rigors of traveling.
